James Frederick HOLE

JAMES FREDERICK HOLE P. ENG, LLD (HON) James Frederick Hole (Jim Hole Sr.) passed away peacefully on the afternoon of November 15, 2018 with his family at his side. Jim is lovingly remembered by his five children, fourteen grandchildren, two great- grandchildren, two daughters- in-law, one grandson-in-law and two granddaughters-in- law. As the youngest of nine children, Jim was born in Edmonton on November 6, 1927 to Harry and Annie Hole. He was a lifelong resident of the City of Edmonton and attended Victoria Composite High School. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1950 with a BSc. in Civil Engineering. In 2005, Jim was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Law by the University of Alberta. After meeting at the University of Alberta, Jim married the mother of his five children Marjorie Grace Hole (McLennan). Following graduation, Jim went to work for his family company Lockerbie & Hole, where he enjoyed a successful career in a company he loved. He was a successful entrepreneur in numerous other businesses including Frobisher Developments, Westcan Malting and various other ventures in Canada and the United States. Jim had a passion for sports, having played both hockey and football for the University of Alberta Golden Bears. He served as President of the CFL, President of the Edmonton Eskimos, Chairman of the Edmonton Oilers and member of the Board of Governors for the NHL. He loved the City of Edmonton and knew that a well-rounded city needed not just sports, but arts and education. His philanthropic contributions were genuinely made for the betterment of the City and those that live in it. Jim loved to be outdoors, and cherished his time spent at his family farm west of the city. He was happiest walking the property with family and a Labrador puppy or two in tow. Jim was a larger than life man, both in stature and accomplishment. Often a serious man, he was actually quite the practical joker, and if you knew him, you'll remember his pranks and one of a kind laugh. He is survived by his special friend Phyllis Kathleen (Casey) Clarke. Jim's family will hold a private memorial service, and will announce the date for a public Celebration of Life in the near future.
