JAMES LUTZ Obituary

After a brief illness with cancer, James Hershey Lutz passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026. He will be dearly missed by Lois, his wife and best friend of 51 years; his children Tracy (Matt) and Ryan (Rebecca); grandson Harrison; and all members of his extended family. Whether you knew him as Jay or Jim, you knew that he was in the truest sense, a Renaissance man. He had a curious mind, was very well read, and could speak thoughtfully on almost any subject. Every conversation with Jay left you having learned something new, and he took great pleasure in recommending books and sharing articles he thought others might enjoy. Born in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania to Walter and Betty Lutz, Jay attended Phillips Exeter Academy where his lifelong love of history took hold. He went on to attend Columbia University where he had the opportunity to learn from many distinguished academics. After graduating from university, he volunteered for service in the U.S. Army and completed a tour of duty (1969-1970) as an infantryman and Reconnaissance team leader with the 101st Airborne. He returned to civilian life and to his studies, pursuing graduate work at the University of Toronto in British imperial and military history. Jay enjoyed a long and rewarding career spanning banking, marketing and advertising in Toronto, including roles with TD Bank, MacLaren's, National Trust and Scotiabank. Better with a clipboard and spreadsheet than a hockey stick, Jay was incredibly generous with his time and supported his children in all of their athletic pursuits. He served as President of the Leaside Hockey Association and Leaside Girl's Softball Association; and sat on the boards of the North York Hockey League and Leaside Memorial Arena. Jay spent a number of years guiding the Upper Canada College and Trinity College School cadet corps, instilling the principles of leadership and service. He remained deeply connected to his military history roots and was active with the Royal Canadian Military Institute, the Queen's Own Rifles, and the Canadian Forces Liaison Council. He traveled extensively, often seeking out places that had first captured his imagination during his academic studies. Together with his family, he enjoyed more than 40 summers in Southampton, Ontario, biking along the shores of Lake Huron and listening to the piper at sunset. When he looked back on his life, he often said he felt lucky. But those of us who knew and loved him knew the truth: we were the lucky ones to have had him in our lives. A visitation will take place on Friday, March 27th at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles - Newbigging Chapel Ltd., 1403 Bayview Avenue, from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. A celebration of life will take place on Sunday, March 29 at the Badminton & Racquet Club of Toronto, 25 St Clair Avenue West, from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm, with remarks at 2:45 pm. If desired, donations can be made to the Children's Aid Society of Toronto. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

Even though only short time till he left Camphill high school in 10th grade, he was a unique friend whom you knew was going to succeed because of his mannerisms, unique intelligence at his age and ability to befriend anyone. A definite positive influence in this life, and you know he will continue in the next!

Jim was a trust colleague and friend for over 20 years.

As the Organizer for Military History Night at the Royal Canadian Military Institute, I also worked with Jim on several committees including the Library Committee.

As a veteran of the Vietnam war, he have several presentations on that topic, along with other world war military conflicts .

He will be missed by all.

I have many fond memories with the UCCR that were a direct result of his leadership and sharing. Thank you.

I was saddened to learn of Jim Lutz´s passing. I had the privilege of meeting Jim at the RCMI some twelve years ago, and he became both a good friend and a wise confidant. His counsel, character, and friendship meant a great deal to me.

Please accept my deepest condolences during this difficult time. May his family find strength and comfort in his memory and in the many lives he touched.

Rest in peace, Jim.

I was saddened to learn of Jim's recent passing. I knew him from Leaside hockey days, where our sons, Brent and Keith, both played and I coached for a few years. I believe Ryan played on a house league team with Keith for at least one year. Outside of hockey I remember chatting with him at the Hanna / Eglinton bus stop where we would often meet on our way to work. He was always friendly and, on one occasion he told me that Brent would make a good teacher and, in fact, that's exactly what he is now doing. Jim made a great contribution to the Leaside community. I will remember him fondly and am very sorry for your loss.

As a recent RCMI director, I knew Jim only briefly but his presence on the board was inspiring. Commodore (ret) Robert Hamilton OMM CD RCN

I knew Jim for only a few years through my association with the Royal Canadian Military Institute. He was always helpful and friendly. I can think of no better word than "wise" to describe him. I know he will be missed at the RCMI. My condolences to all of Jim's family and friends.

I have many fond memories of Jay, having known him for some 50+ years. In particular, when my husband was terminally ill a few years back, Jay would come to our home almost daily and sit with John. I will always remember his generosity and thoughtfulness at a difficult time, so appreciated by myself and family. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences to Lois and family. Sincerely, Pam Wheaton and Toby, Sarah and Megan Vincett.

What an exceptional gentleman. He saw the best in all of us. I loved chatting with Jim. He would on occasion walk past my house, not far from his, and enjoy watching my son and I throw a baseball around. He was generous with his time and wisdom. I am shocked at his passing because I had no idea. I have a few conversations left outstanding with him, as did my son.

So sorry to lose such a good friend and colleague. His "Follow me" leadership ethos was an inspiration to his former cadets at UCC, TCS and 2881 cadet corps! He will be sorely missed by all.
