JAMES MATTHEWS Obituary

James Gordon Matthews died on February 5, 2026, at the age of 85, in Toronto, surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Ross Matthews and Barbara Matthews; and his sister, Ellen Matthews; as well as his first wife, Anne Rutherford. Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Jacqueline Le Saux; his daughters, Caroline Matthews Scott (Joseph Scott) and Joelle Matthews; and his two cherished grandsons, Ryley and Sidney Scott, of whom he was endlessly proud. Jim delighted in watching their athletic pursuits and was their biggest supporter, always impressed by their determination, skill, and spirit. He is also survived by his brothers Hugh Matthews (Mary) of Vancouver and John Matthews (Naty) of Ottawa and by Douglas Davis (Caroline's brother) of London England, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim grew up in Peterborough and spent his high school years at Lakefield College School where he developed a love of nature and formed life long friendships. The school always held a special place in his heart. Following undergraduate studies at University of Toronto, he worked his way through Europe for a year and graduated from Osgoode Hall faculty of law in 1966. Jim was known for his strength of character, integrity, and strong moral compass. He built a respected career as a corporate lawyer at Aird & Berlis, where he practiced for many years and was admired by colleagues for his professionalism, fairness, and principled approach to the law. Jim served on the boards of Lakefield College Foundation and the Canadian Canoe Museum. Jim was a consummate storyteller. He loved regaling family and friends with stories of boyhood mischief and formidable teachers at Lakefield, his year in Europe, working at Jasper, arduous canoe trips in the north and summers at Lake Catchacoma. Known for his athleticism, Jim enjoyed playing tennis at the Badminton & Racquet Club and was a long-time skier at Devil's Glen. He completed three marathons in Toronto between ages 58 and 60. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday June 16, 2026, at the Badminton & Racquet Club, 25 St. Clair Avenue W. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Lakefield College School (www.lcs.on.ca/support-lcs/donate-now) or the Canadian Canoe Museum (canoemuseum.ca/support/donate/in-memory).

I met Jim initially through his co-worker and mutual friend David Miller. It was Jim who approached me a long time ago to get involved in governance for Lakefield College School. I served with Jim on the Board for many years (and remain involved today). Jim was an advisor, mentor and friend and one of the best story tellers I've ever known. My condolences to the family of a wonderful person. Nick Lewis

My sincere condolences to Jim's family. He and I enjoyed five great years as close friends and teammates at the Grove. He was a first class guy then and, judging by the comments of others here, remained so.

I've known Jim since I arrived at Lakefield as a new boy in 1956, as I was trailing my brother who had been his classmate, I already knew of him but, little did I know that he would become a constant presence and friend throughout my life and career, in ways too numerous to mention. I will deeply miss that, always welcome, presence through the years. Condolences in his case seem woefully inadequate for the gaping holes he leaves behind in such a tragic flash.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to Jacqueline and all of Jim's family.
When I arrived at Aird & Berlis in 1992 as a new partner, Jim was one of the first to welcome me. His kindness, warmth and always present sense of humour were his essential character. Jim had a way of making everyone around feel comfortable, even in difficult circumstances. I will miss his wisdom and sparkle. The rest of us got older, but Jim never aged! See you on the slopes, my friend.

My heartfelt condolences to all of you and especially Jacqueline, Jôelle and Caroline. This is a great loss.
Jim was my brother-in-law through my wife, Liliane Le Saux. We loved Jim, as did all who knew him. He was a true gentleman who enjoyed life and hard work. He generously welcomed us into his company, always with a smiling face. We enjoyed his many stories and his inquiries of family further afield.
Jim will remain in my memory contently reading the Globe in the morning while having breakfast as the sun peers through the window of the treasured family Catchacoma cottage.

My condolences to everyone who knew and loved Jim. Jim was my brother-in-law. Jim was easy to like. He was welcoming to everyone including my dog and had a genuine interest in getting to know them. I brought many friends over during visits in Toronto and he was always a gracious host.

We shared a love of canoeing and camping. We would canoe at the cottage and make fires at the ski chalet and he would share many stories about his colourful life. These will memories will stick with me.

My condolences to Jacquline, Carolyn, Rochelle and the extended Matthews family. Jim was a mentor to me as a student and young lawyer at Aird&Berlis. He was smart, resourceful and a consummate professional as a corporate /commercial lawyer, but most of all, was extremely ethical and fair. His way of working reinforced that the very best lawyers behave this way - hard working, providing excellent advice, but in a ethical and conscientious manner. We shared a love of the outdoors, sports, and Lakefield College School, and I saw first hand how devoted he was to the Grove, as our firm hosted regular board meetings. Jim helped me start my career in the right way, and was an ongoing friend and advisor to me and many others who were lucky enough to be his mentees, or his clients. A truly good man who will be very much missed. David Miller

Jimmy was one of my Dad's best friends. Back in those days, people that were close were family. Jimmy became Uncle Jimmy. I have been a teacher at Lakefield College for 23 years now and that is in large part because of Jimmy Mathews. Jimmy defined what it meant to be a good man and he possessed the rarest of all qualities. Jimmy had grace. I am lucky to have known him.
