James O'Neil Obituary

Passed away peacefully after a brief illness with his devoted wife Dianne at his side. Survived by Dianne; his brother, Sean and countless friends. Jim was born in St. John, New Brunswick, grew up in Etobicoke, and attended Royal York High School where he was captain of the junior and senior football teams. He went on to graduate from Western University where he earned the nickname Mad Dog (a story for another day!) After a year in the corporate world, he and Dianne set off for a two year sojourn in Europe, living the life of iconic hippies, ultimately getting married in London before returning to the real world. Then followed a successful business career, beginning at Merrill Lynch and then running various companies where he was universally recognized as an astute and caring leader by coworkers and employees. His formal career ended as President of DDS from which he retired at age 62. Jim, a man of integrity and principle, loved and respected by so many, lived a true storybook life with Dianne, loving and laughing together until the end. No kids or pets, just love of travel, sports and each other. He enjoyed good books, debate and the company of his many friends including at Markland Wood Golf Club, Imperial Golf Club (Naples) and at regular meetings at Starbucks with the Valhalla Morning Boys. Funeral arrangements are entrusted with Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel. There will be no formal service but many glasses will be tipped in his honour by those who knew him. Those who so wish may make a donation in Jim's name to Dorothy Ley Hospice or a charity of their choice. A gathering to honour Jim's memory will be scheduled at a later date.
