November 9 1922 - May 11 2011 After a short stay at the Toronto General Hospital, Dr. James Reid died at the age of 88. His was a long and productive life, and he leaves behind his wife Nancy, three children, Bruce (and Nushy), Peter (and Kim) and Wendy (and Peter), plus four grandchildren Sarah, Christie, Madlen, and Olin as well as his brother David. His life's work was in medicine, graduating from the University of Toronto medical school in 1947 with a further specialist qualification in obstetrics and gynecology, also at the University of Toronto. He practiced general medicine in south-western Ontario from 1948 to 1955 when he returned to school for his specialist degree. From the former Sarnia General Hospital (now the Bluewater Health Foundation) he served Wyoming, Camlachie and Petrolia and as an obstetrician he delivered thousands of children in Port Credit and Mississauga at the Mississauga Hospital (now the Trillium Health Centre). In the final stage of his career he practiced overseas in a stimulating medical environment. His retirement began with extensive travel throughout the world with his wife Nancy, before settling back in Toronto where he studied history, another passion, graduating from the U of T Victoria College (completing a family tradition) with an Honours BA in History in 1998. Also during his retirement, he campaigned regularly for the Conservative Party in his riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore, volunteered for the annual Victoria College book sale and studied computer programming at Humber College. The value of enquiry and formal education was something he encouraged and shared with his family and he supported his children in those pursuits throughout his life, including numerous postgraduate degrees and a recent doctoral degree by Wendy. In harmony with his family's farming roots and his own childhood in and around Dunvegan, Ontario, he sought out gardens to tend wherever he could find them. His tenacity, courage and curiosity fuelled his continuing ambitions and motivated his engagement with life to the very end. The family of Dr. Reid is very appreciative of the staff and professionals in the General Internal Medicine Department of the Toronto General Hospital. The 'TGH' was an institution that Jim held in high esteem for its quality of medical practice, research and education. He undertook residency training there during his specialist degree.
