James ROBERTS Obituary

JAMES GORDON ROBERTS August 9, 1928 - September 19, 2021 It is with great sadness that we announce Jim's passing. He is predeceased by his beautiful bride of 65 years Mary Elizabeth (Powell). He leaves behind his children Brian (Tracy), Wendy, Bruce (Sara) and his grandchildren Jamie, Mike, Dave, Evan, Maddy, Kate and Ryan. Jim graduated from UCC in 1946 and subsequently served in the UNTD on the HMSC Athabasca. He then attended University College at the University of Toronto for finance and commerce. Jim went on to have a successful 38 year career at Reed Stenhouse Insurance Brokers. Jim was an avid curler at The Granite Club and attended the QIB from 1974-2020 where he was always a consummate entertainer. In 1949, at DeGrassi Point on Lake Simcoe, a place most dear to his heart, Jim started building the home he would spend his life in. From cutting down the trees to build the original cabin and building the stone fireplace, to building the additions he added as his family grew, Jim did all the construction himself. A true labour of love. In his 93 years, Jim was beloved by so many friends and family. His kindness, warmth and very notably his jokes and stories will be deeply missed by all. There will be a small family funeral. We will have a memorial celebration of life next summer at DeGrassi. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to RVH Barrie Palliative Care Unit or The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority.

Just heard of Jim´s passing when I dropped by the pub today after six-months away. Was so sad but could not help smiling on my way home as I remembered all the wonderful occasions we shared during cocktails at The Kennys´. Lovely Mary and gregarious Jim - he kept us so entertained with bountiful humour, engrossing stories and a generous heart. I will never forget that smile!

My condolences to Brian and Tracy, Wendy, Bruce and Sara and all the grandkids. They have lost a great father and grandfather. I was one of Jim's greatest admirers and fortunately, also a very good friend.
I have known Jim about 60 years, having started curling on the same rink at the Granite that long ago, along with Jim Mills, Jim McCartney and myself. We did a lot of bonspieling for about 25 years and spent a lot of time together. Everyone who knew Jim knew that he was a raconteur par excellence and rinks loved to curl against us for the drinks session after when Jim would keep us entertained as long as we would listen, and his dialects were second to none. More importantly, Jim's character was first class in every aspect. I was privileged to be a friend. I will miss him!

Dear Brian, Bruce and Wendy:
Sending my love to all of you as you cope with the passing of your Dad. Very fond memories are flooding back as I think of Jim at DeGrassi Point. He was a busy, engaging man with a great smile and laugh. He was always doing something; did he ever sit down? His zeal for life will be remembered-always.

Fondly, Alix

Dear Brian, Tracy, Wendy, Bruce and all, I was so sorry to hear about Jims death. He was such a great man. He and Mary were so good to Mum, always making an effort to visit her, even when she was not at her best. Whenever they came out to Victoria he would make sure we got together and we always had a lot of laughs together and reminisced about the cottage. I will miss those visits. He was bigger then life and it was great to have known him. On his behalf a donation was made to The Lake Simcoe Conservancy Foundation. Again Im so sorry.
