JAMES RUSNAK Obituary

(1941 - 2025) James Rusnak, known affectionately to all as J.R., passed away peacefully, in his Montreal home on December 28, 2025, at the age of 84. A man defined by his reliability, curiosity, and unwavering kindness, J.R. leaves behind a legacy of professional excellence and deep devotion to his family. Born on November 1, 1941, in Lac-Mégantic, J.R. was one of nine children born to Andrew and Maria Rusnak (née Kovac). His upbringing on the family farm instilled in him a work ethic and a sense of loyalty that stayed with him throughout his life. Though he made his home in Montreal, his heart remained in the country; he spent his life travelling back and forth to the family farm to remain close to his sisters, his brothers and the land where he grew up. J.R. enjoyed a distinguished career, most notably as a long-time "IBMer." He specialized in Human Resources and Project Management, where his calm leadership was instrumental in major transitions - including the landmark relocation of IBM's Montreal offices in 1991 from Place Ville Marie to 1250 de la Gauchetière where he was recognized by IBM with an Award of Excellence for his outstanding achievement. He concluded his professional journey with Kingston Byers, bringing the same dedication and expertise to his work there. Beyond his professional achievements, J.R. was a man of simple pleasures and sharp intellect. He was a fixture in front of the television for Montreal Canadiens games, an avid golfer, and a football fan. He rarely met a crossword puzzle he couldn't solve, but his true passion was people. J.R. was the person you called when you needed help; he was a natural listener who was always there for those he loved. J.R. is survived by his beloved wife, Ann McMahon Rusnak; his children, William and Maryann (Mark); and his cherished grandchildren, Félix and Kyla. He is also survived by his siblings Robert, Emily, and Elizabeth. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary; and his brothers, Andrew, Edward, John, and Donald. A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends in Montreal on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 6470 rue Booker, Brossard, from 1-4 p.m.

I worked with Jim for several years in IBM's Montreal Offices, back in the day.
I think IBM'ers were recognized for a very positive, "can-do" attitude. That spirit epitomized Jim.
He approached every day with a smile , and there was never a problem that he would not tackle head-on. He was a pleasure to work with.
My condolences to Ann.
