James SWAN Obituary

DR. JAMES SWAN 1946 - 2021 At home, with friends and family at his side, Dr. James Swan died on June 4, 2021 ending his courageous battle with brain cancer. In February 2020 Jim arranged a CT scan for himself after telling friends he thought he had the same thing that his identical twin George had died from less than a year before. Jim came to that conclusion as he found he was forgetting details. Less than a week later a biopsy was done to confirm the diagnosis of a glioblastoma form of brain cancer. Like his brother, he approached his treatments with an optimism that he could be a survivor. He continued caring for his ailing wife with the help of personal support workers. Through this he demonstrated grace, dignity and gratitude for their support. Jim graduated from medicine at Queen's University. He did his cardiology residency at the University of Toronto and a fellowship in cardiac ultrasound at Emory University in Atlanta. On his return to Canada in 1977, he was among the first to introduce 2-D echocardiography to practice. For the next forty years he devoted himself to clinical cardiology and advancing the specialty. He was a proud member of the Rouge Valley Health System and founding member of a robust, all service cardiology group. Dr. Swan was a founding member of the world recognized Cardiac Care Network of Ontario. He was instrumental in setting up one of the first catheterization labs and a stand-alone angioplasty suite in the community. He was chair of the Section of Cardiology in the Ontario Medical Association and president of the Ontario Association of Cardiologists. As digital technologies advanced, Jim was a leader in adapting to the needs of cardiac echo labs. Programs he developed were utilized by many institutions around the world and locally in Scarborough, Ajax and Collingwood. Three activities Jim enjoyed the most and never let anyone forget were hockey, spending time at his cottage in Shanty Bay and travelling with his companion, his dog Hennessy. While Jim and George were stalwarts on the Upper Canada College hockey team, it was George who went on to win a national championship with Cornell as a goalie. Jim satisfied his passion for hockey by being the doctor for the NHL old timers. At his oasis in Shanty Bay, there were family gatherings, weddings as well as a serenity that seemed to soothe. Close by was his horse farm of which Jim was particularly proud. He and Hennessy would walk the property on nature walks or inspect the construction of the new barn. Over the last few years Jim got involved with the Global Surgery group at the University of Toronto. Together with the Bethune Medical Development Association he travelled to China three times where he shone as a teacher of echocardiography. He set up programs for young Chinese cardiologists and sponsored six of them to join in his lab in Toronto for further instruction. He was given the Honorary Chair of Cardiology from several institutions in China. His other trips included Jamaica and Nunavut. He viewed these missions as some of the most meaningful experiences in his career as a physician. Both Jim and his brother George were big supporters of these humanitarian efforts, so much so that Jim was instrumental in creating The George and James Swan Chair in Global Surgery at Temerty Medicine, University of Toronto. Above all Dr. Jim Swan was a gentle soul who was kind, generous and always willing to help anyone in need. As a friend, if you went to Jim with a problem he almost immediately looked upon it as his problem as well. He had an ability to comfort that left those he was in contact with, either patients or friends, feeling more secure in knowing he was there. Predeceased by his mother, Isobel Swan (1987), his father Dr. Henry Swan (1999) and his identical twin George (2019), Jim is survived by his wife Carolyn, sons Matt McQuillen (Rachel), Marc McQuillen (Caroline), grandchildren David and Sarah, his sister-in-law Louise and loving nieces Dr. Kathryn (Will), Jennifer (Jorge) and Erica (James). A funeral service will be held when COVID-19 restrictions permit. A Celebration of Life is planned for September. Flowers graciously declined. In recognition of Dr. Swan's passionate commitment to global surgery, and if so desired, donations may be directed to The George and James Swan Chair in Global Surgery. I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr.Swan, which I just found out this morning. I have been a patient of Dr. Swans's since 1990 when he became my cardiologist, watching over me at the young age of 26. He facilitated a successful valve replacement surgery for me at the age of 28. Dr.Swan was more than a cardiologist to me. We developed a strong bond over our yearly conversations about hockey/sports and always supporting and giving me the green light to play, in spite of my heart issues. Most of my yearly checkups always involved conversations on sports updates and, of course, always a few laughs. He always had a way of easing my mind, never allowing me to worry about my condition. I actually always looked forward to my yearly appointments. I true testament to the person he was; a kind soul who had a huge impact on people's lives, not just mine. I will truly miss our hockey talks and how he would always say to me "the valve is only a problem, if you're not scoring goals". Dr. Swan will be truly missed by many. My sincere condolences go out to the entire Swan family.

What a great man and incredible empathetic human being. If you had a heart problem as soon as he entered the room to see you a calm came over you. His reassurance and clinical skills were the best you could be given. He was a close family friend and attended my wedding 34 years ago. What a special man. I hope Jim is happy and talking about his cottage and Henessey. RIP Jim, you were an exceptional human being and helped my family cope with my mom's long term chronic disease. Say hi to her for me.

Jim was a very kind and caring person. He helped me for years to correct a heart rhythm problem. When all the medications failed, he made sure I received the ablation procedure I needed. Through the years we got to know each other and I looked forward to seeing and talking with him. He was a great doctor and he will be missed. My deepest condolences to his family.

What wonderful calming presence Jim had at Rouge Valley when I worked there from 1985 to 2006, mostly in the ICU. Always respectful to staff and patients, he will be missed. His contributions have been extraordinary to the cardiology and I send my deepest condolences to his family. Diane, RN

To Carolyn and the rest of the Swan family, Jim was my best friend and confidant for 15 years. I met Jimmy in December of 1981 in Centenary emerg. That night an acute case of Paricarditis was confirmed. As Jimmy would tell me over the years, Bruce our professors told us you are the one patient who would drive us question our practice. Complication after having surgery drove us both to question if I would ever regain my health. But we did. He often said that good people deserved good health and good friendship. I feel like I have lost a best friend. God bless you Jimmy and your family. I hope there is a large candy dish waiting for you and not too many salads. The world has lost a champion.

Dr. James Swan was my cardiologist for more than 15 years through his ‘Heart Health Institute’. I was one of his patients that he was able to call upon, to be examined by other residents within, simply because of the unique procedure that I had done, which was what they call the ‘Bentall’ procedure. This involves replacing the aortic valve, because it was deformed from birth which can occur in one of a set of twins, from time to time. I’m the identical twin which had this operation done at St. Micheal’s Hospital. Upon Dr. Swan reviewing my background he would talk at great lengths with me in regards to himself & George being identical twins as well. Dr. Swan was my ‘follow-up’ cardiologist who always showed kindness, compassion, sensitivity, understanding & knowledge with each & every visit we had together over those years. I also grew to see that Dr. Swan was so very interested in learning of my medical case study, so as he used to indicate, other residents can learn from this too. He would always say that he was appreciative & grateful for having the opportunity to both learn & teach. I’m grateful for Dr. Swan being in my life, I will always miss him. My sincere condolences go out to the entire Swan family at this time & may God bless you all.

My family met Dr. Swan while he walked his beautiful dog Hennessy in our neighbourhood. We enjoyed conversation about a wide array of topics while we walked and talked. He was a kind, inquisitive, generous and a very unassuming man with great knowledge and a gentle heart. He is missed by our family. He made the world a better place.
Our condolences to his whole family.

Dr. Swan was my late father’s cardiologist. He was so soft spoken and kind, but always double-checked my father’s scans, often repeating them himself, looking for answers. He gave my father the gift of a longer life with better quality. And I was given more precious time with my father. I am so grateful. I am so sorry for your loss. My condolences to all of you. Thank you, Dr. Swan. May you rest in peace. You made the world a much better place. Jenny Oad

Dearest Carolyn, Matt and Marc,
Such sad news. My memories of Jim and his kindness extended further than being his neighbour in Shanty Bay. He chauffeured my mother to Toronto and was welcoming to your beautiful home in Hoggs Hollow. And he just LOVED those goldies! Argus, Linus. I remember him jogging up the 2nd, paddling the green canoe and so proudly being captain of the turquoise boatboating Carolyn into Kempenfest. Please accept my, Mayas’ and Maxs’ deepest sympathies. He had a brilliant and very influential career. He will be missed.
