Jan RUBES Obituary
JAN RUBES
JAN RUBES 1920-2009 With great sadness, the family announces the peaceful passing of their beloved Jan on June 29th 2009, at age 89. He emigrated to Canada in 1948 from his native Czechoslovakia. An acclaimed operatic basso with the Canadian Opera Company whose singing career spanned over 20 years, he went on to enjoy considerable success in theatre, television and films, continuing to perform into his mid-eighties. Jan excelled at many sports, particularly tennis, representing Canada at international Seniors' tournaments. Recipient of the Order of Canada in 1995 and honorary degrees from the universities of Windsor and Guelph. Left to treasure many extraordinary adventures and wonderful memories are Susan, his adored wife of almost 60 years; sons Jonathan (Judith) and Tony (Brenda) and grandsons Morgan, Colin and Jasan. Predeceased by son Christopher in 1996 and brother Miroslav. Fondly remembered by extended family members and many lifelong friends in theatrical, musical, and sporting circles. Our father was the quintessential family man, supporting and encouraging his wife, children and grandchildren in their careers and instilling in them a love of sports and outdoor life. He always made a supreme effort in all activities including singing, acting, painting and sports and he inspired all those with whom he worked and played. Jan, you will be terribly missed. Cremation has taken place. In accordance with Jan's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Condolences to the family should be addressed to 70 Mathersfield Drive, Toronto ON M4W 3W5. No flowers please.
