JANETTE LEDWITH Obituary

September 19, 1934 – July 12, 2025

Janette LaRue Ledwith (née Foster) died peacefully at Milton District Hospital on July 12, 2025, at the age of 90. Janette will be fondly remembered by her brother, Robert (Sonya); nieces and nephews, Wendy (Jamie), David (Kathleen), Kate, Adrian (Deborah), Craig, Christopher (Lee), Linda (Dennis), Ellen (Dan); as well as extended family members and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Austan; brothers, Ralph and Paul; her parents, Kenneth and Helen Foster; brother-in-law, Michael Ledwith; and nephew, Peter Ledwith.

Janette was born in 1934 in Bowmanville. The family moved to Milton when Janette was three years old. Janette became the big sister to her three brothers. The family was active in the Milton community and lived on Charles, Martin, and Court Streets.

Janette had an academic background in music, English, history, and attended Teachers college. She was the sole music teacher for all the Milton elementary schools in the early 1950s. Her musical forte carried her through as an organist for numerous churches, choirs, spiritual, and women's groups in the region.

Janette married Austan Ledwith in 1958. They moved from the Milton core to Appleby Line on the escarpment in the 1970s. They took pride in their vegetable and perennial gardens, and their door was always open for friends and family. Janette moved to Rockwood in 2005 to accommodate her aging mother. Austan spent his last few years in long-term care. Janette was a huge advocate for the rights and needs of the residents in care. She held regular meetings with staff and administration alike to ensure the highest quality of care was maintained.

Janette touched many lives, including advocating for the welfare of women during her presidential standing for Halton and Toronto with the World Council of Churches at the Toronto Anglican Diocese, 1987–1991. She volunteered with the VON, Canadian Cancer Society, Red Cross, and canvassed for social political parties. She explored spiritual avenues, including teaching of Tai Chi health recovery and connecting with a Unitarian community.

Janette envisioned a co-living residence for women looking for security, companionship, sharing, and friendship. She competed a six-unit residence (OakHill), a progressive vision ahead of its time. Janette moved back to Milton in 2024. In the end, dementia peacefully overwhelmed her essence, while Janette's spirits remained high. Her groundbreaking spirit carries a legacy of genuine engagement with others and forever a teacher of music, movement, mindfulness, and spirituality.
