Jean BUSBY Obituary

JEAN BUSBY Died June 14, 2023 Jean Busby nee Arnott, born 1921, in Bright, Ontario. Passed peacefully on June 14, 2023. She was a 101 years young. A compliment to those older, who are young of mind, that was especially true of Jeannie. Jeannie's friends, and she had many, knew when they saw her, first things first, they got a big hug. She was genuinely happy to see you. And then, over a cup of good coffee, the discussion began. She always asked questions, because she, and her husband, Jack, too, wanted to know what you thought. About anything and everything. That was the open-door atmosphere at their house in Port Credit. Everyone came to the side door, and because it was a few steps down from the kitchen, Jeannie just waved you up. After that, you knew enough to just walk in. And people did. All the time. Not only their own friends, but friends of their children, Ann, Briar, JR and Alex. You didn't avoid Jeannie and Jack, like perhaps, other parents. And that spirit continued after Jack's untimely death at the age of 63. Inspired by the nurses that served overseas during World War II, Jeannie began a career in nursing after high school, at the Woodstock General Hospital, in southwestern Ontario. She furthered her studies in Montreal, at McGill, and in Boston. She returned to Ontario to serve as a surgical nurse at Toronto General, and to teach obstetrics at The Hospital for Sick Children (Sick Kids). She retired in the 1960s to raise her four children. She once said that nursing saved her life. At loose ends after Ann's death at the too-young age of 17, Jeannie returned to nursing in 1975, working as one of only two women on staff at the Don Jail. She helped inmates with mental health issues and in that role, later moved over to The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), expanding to the Sexology Clinic, as well, consulting for the Ontario Parole Board, until her retirement in 2012 at the age of 92. She lived independently, but she was never alone. Always quick with a laugh, she was constantly visited by friends and family. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack; and her daughter, Ann. She is survived by her daughter, Briar (Tim); and her sons, JR and Alex. She will be lovingly remembered by granddaughter, Kayla; and her husband, Max; their son, Rowan; and the newly arrived twins, Bennett and Atticus; and grandson, Quin and his wife, Jenica; and their children, Owen, Keegan and Jonathan. JR's sons Aidan and Colin will miss their Grandi, as will Alex's son, Sam, and daughter, Robin. Sister-in-law, Jean and nephews from Bright Ontario and afar. She was loved and supported by Fran, Martha, Nancy, Monika, Jim, Joan, Shirley and Susie.

Goodbye, Mrs. Busby.
It has been many years since I last saw Jean, but throughout my formative years, she was my second Mom. The influence she and her family have had on my life is profound.
Once, after talking with Jean about the historical value of religion, what human spirit really meant and the Pagans, I was quite sure Jean was an atheist. A few days later, I walked into the Mineola Rd. house, and there was Jean, dancing full tilt in the living room, with a big grin on her face to George Harrison's "Awaiting On You All".
One memory of the thousands I am privileged to have of Jean.

As I began my independent life many years ago, Jean and Jack gave me these kitchen chairs to help get me launched. Aside from the utility they´ve provided for almost 50 years, they´ve served as a nice reminder of the warm, caring, and fun people that gave them to me. I especially remember how accepting they were of me during these formative years. I never felt judged despite providing them with plenty of material with which to judge me!
I´ve lived in western Canada for over forty years now so was only able to visit Jean on a few occasions during this time. I found her to be the same warm and engaging person as always; able to pick up right where we´d left off. It´s a rare gift and my good fortune to have known her. My condolences to Jean´s family.

As Jean and I only lived a block apart for many years, our paths would frequently cross, largely due to our involvement with CFUW. I so looked forward to her cheery greeting and chat when I would drop off a book for the Book Exchange or meet up at International Affairs and Art Tours. A mentor, she demonstrated through action, that at any age, we can contribute our skills to better society.

I knew Jean for many years through CFUW. She was always friendly, interested in what was going on, involved. She will be missed.

Jeannie and Jack were the first adults, outside my family, that I really talked to. And it was their doing, not mine. They took an interest. As the years went by, I was amazed how many of Ann´s friends would visit, long after she was gone, especially at Christmas.

A wonderful lady.. active to almost the end.
I knew Jean from CFUW Mississauga, where we were both in the Art Tours group.
Jean was active in our group, until a little before Covid arrived.

Condolences to her family.
Jean was a treasure.

Sadly, I did not know Jean , but was a classmate of Briar at PCSS back in the 70´s. Also remember her older sister Anne very well. Clearly Jean raised two amazing and beautiful daughters who were as bright and radiant as their dear Mum. Thinking of the family today and mourning their great loss of an incredibly loving matriarch.

Jean and I had so my good memories when we took a cruise with other like minded people from 80 Port St. We shared such a good time together, dining, dancing especially when Jean took one of the performers coat and hat. And she became the pirate on the dance floor.

Jean was such a valued member of our community at 80 Port St. She participated in all social events and was a lively part of the regular Friday night get togethers...often with a small glass of her preferred beverage...scotch. She was an inspiration to us all. We remember Jean fondly.

I loved Jeannie. She was quick to laugh and super-sharp, yet empathetic and accepting. Her endurance and attitude was inspiring. I got to know her a couple of years before Jack died, and her resilience in that moment is something I will never forget. She was a lovely mom and a welcoming friend. Much love and hugs to you all, Alex, Briar, and JR.
