JEAN COLE Obituary

Jean Murray Cole, in her 98th year at Lakefield Extendicare on December 12, 2024. Born November 7, 1927, in Brantford, Ontario. Journalist, writer, historian, and dedicated volunteer. Predeceased by her loving husband of 46 years, Alfred O. Cooper Cole (1925-1996). Much loved mother of Sally (Michael Huberman), Leslie (John Crump), Ian, Alan (Bev Sweetman), Catherine (Gordon Wood), and Emily (Michael Wieczorek). Granny Jean to Samuel Huberman (Caroline Wagner), Isabella Huberman, Margaret, Rosalind and Sophie Crump, Merlot Duncan-Cole, (Michael Rybak), Jack Cole, Angus Cole (Missy Chua), Hilary Atleo (Clifford), Madeline Whetung (Joaquin Santana), Olivia Whetung, Jessica Wood (Chris Myers), Stirling Wood (Alexandra), Murray Wood (Ellen Doty), Richard Wood (Willow Austin), Daniel Earle (Shay McWilliams) and Noah Earle. Great-grandmother to 13. Predeceased by her parents, Gwendolyn Rivers and Alexander A. Murray; and her siblings, Ian, Robin, Donald, Hugh, and Bonnie Murray. Jean was a citizen extraordinaire. As President of the Peterborough Historical Society, she oversaw the restoration of Hutchison House and the establishment of the Museum. As Chair of the Peterborough Public Library Board Jean worked to build a new central library. Jean was involved with many other local organizations including the Canadian Canoe Museum, Lang Pioneer Village Museum, Christ Church Community Museum, Lakefield, and St. John's Anglican Church. She also served on the boards of The Ontario Historical Society and TVO. Jean is the author and editor of eight books and numerous articles about fur trade and local history. Jean was recognized for her many contributions with numerous awards, including an honorary doctorate from Trent University and the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship. The family extends warm thanks to the caring staff of Lakefield Extendicare. Memorial service on January 4, 2025, at 2 p.m. at St. John's Anglican Church, 99 Brock Street, Peterborough, reception to follow. Jean and Alf were friends of my parents. When I arrived at Trent University as a student, they welcomed me warmly. I remember Jean as a genial and gracious host. I am extending my condolences to Sally, Leslie, and family and friends.
