Jeannine and John ALLUM Obituary

JEANNINE GABRIELLE PLOUCKENS-ALLUM JOHN ANTHONY ALLUM Peter, Richard, and Claire Allum are sad to announce the death of their parents Jeannine Gabrielle Julienne Marie Ghislaine Plouckens-Allum and John Anthony (Tony) Eaton Allum on March 10 and June 14, 2022, respectively. Tony, born March 22, 1925, in Chiswick, London, was the only son of Alfred John Allum (1880-1950) and Dorothy Constance Mary (née Payne) (1896-1979). Jeannine, born September 17th, 1933, in Brussels, Belgium, was the oldest daughter of Ferdinand Plouckens (1900-1956) and Marie Isabelle Ghislaine Baré-Plouckens (1900-1984). Tony is predeceased by his sisters Nancy and Janet and Jeannine by her sister Paulette. Tony survived the London Blitz in WW II before becoming a radar officer in the Royal Navy. In 1945 he received a B.Sc. in General Physics from London University. In 1950 he received a B.Sc. in mining geology from The Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, London. In 1949 he did geological fieldwork in Newfoundland, Canada; Kenya; and Nigeria. He worked for the British Overseas Geological Surveys department from 1953-1966. Jeannine left Belgium in 1946 to live in Africa. She returned to Louvain in 1952 to study nursing and matriculated with distinction in 1955. Tony met Jeannine, in 1958, as a post-graduate nurse at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London. They married on August 30, 1958, and bought a house in south London, where Claire (1959) and Richard (1961) were born. In 1960 Tony received his Ph.D. from the University of London. In 1966 he published "Photogeology and Regional Mapping." Jeannine typed his Ph.D. and the book manuscript. In 1966 the UN seconded Tony as an exploration/photogeologist and the family moved to Honiara, Guadalcanal. Jeannine taught nursing at the Central Hospital. In 1968 they returned to Ewell, Surrey, England and Peter (1970) was born. After working 3 years with the Institute of Geological Sciences, Tony took a job with the International Nickle Company of Canada. The family moved to Oakville, Ontario. From 1978 Jeannine worked at the Oakville-Trafalgar Library to help her children through university. Tony retired in 1990 and Jeannine in 1998. In 2010 they moved to Burlington. They loved to read and travel. When Tony could no longer travel, Jeannine went solo, eventually visiting Petra, a lifelong dream. Tony revived his interest in chess and in 1997 defeated a past US grandmaster at the Bermuda International Open. His greatest contribution to geology was his paper, "Photogeological Interpretation of Areas of Regional Metamorphism," published in the Transactions of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in 1960. Tony and Jeannine's ashes are scattered together along Wedgewood Creek, Oakville.
