Jennie HATFIELD-LYON Obituary

JENNIE HATFIELD-LYON 1955 - 2021 Jennie died unexpectedly, at home on Tuesday, April 20, 2021. She had been diagnosed with breast and brain cancer in late 2020 and was making valiant efforts (with the assistance of the great medical team at Sunnybrook) to maintain her positive energy and infectious sense of humour. Blessed with innate curiosity and a formidable intellect, during her working years Jennie was a highly respected international human rights lawyer and teacher (at Queen's University), and editor of Ward's Tax Law and Planning (Davies Ward & Beck). She developed an unusual specialty in court, representing the unique and fortunately small number of Canadians who had been kidnapped by U.S. bounty hunters. She greatly enjoyed coaching law students over many years of international law moot court competitions. Among the recognitions of her achievements, in 1990 Jennie was among the distinguished group of 'Women On The Move' award recipients (sponsored by the Toronto Sun). Jennie grew up in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and enjoyed a close relationship with her extended family and friends on the Cape. She was a loving and diligent caregiver for her late mother, Lois (Hallet) Betterley of Hyannis. Jennie acquired an additional wonderful family and friends when she moved to Toronto to be with her eventual husband, Dan Lyon. Together they raised a nephew/ adoptive son, Damien who is now the proud father of young Hunter Hatfield-Lyon. Jennie leaves a legacy of kindness, especially with respect to both people and animals in distress. Donations may be made in Jennie's name to Amnesty International, Brandeis University or the Toronto Wildlife Centre. A family graveside service will be held on the Cape when feasible.

I just read the sad news in the Brandeis alumni magazine. Jennie and I were suitemates her sophomore and my senior year. We shared a love of theatre, but Jennie was determined to be a lawyer. That was rare among our generation, and it made a big impression on me, particularly since she was so beautiful and kind. I am so glad to hear that she achieved her goal and put it to good use. She never knew it, but she inspired me to apply to law school several years later and ultimately to have a long career as a public sector lawyer. I would never have thought about that until I met Jennie.

My condolences to Dan and her family.

Dan, I hope this entry brings you a little laugh.
I knew Jennie while at Brandeis. She spelled her name the same as my mother did.
Jennie was in my roommate's creative writing freshman course.
There was a woman who often visited us and spent more time during her visits that I wanted her to.
There was a knock on our door. I told my roommate I didn't want to talk to that woman. So I dived under the bed to hide. Then Jennie walked in.
Obviously, I couldn't come out from under the bed. She would have thought I was crazy. So I stayed there not making a sound. My roommate also had a sense of humor. So, he dropped himself down to sit on the bed, nearly crushing me. Jennie stayed and talked for a while with me under the bed. When she left, I crawled out. My roommate was in hysterics. I felt like a fool.
But, Jennie never knew.
I remember her as a cind and sweet person. Reading about her, it sounds like she remained that way.
I am so sorry for your loss.

In fall 1997, Jennie taught me international human rights law at Queens University. She can take credit for introducing me to a subject upon which I’ve built much of my career. Jennie was enthusiastic, funny, and very kind. Her classes were among the highlights of my week. I was shocked to learn that Jennie was unwell. My condolences. John Done, lawyer, Kingston, Ontario

Jennifer was one of those rare intellectually brilliant, determined and driven, yet so compassionate
and most generous people that one should only be so lucky to meet and know in this short life here.
