Jeremy McNEIL Obituary

Jeremy died as he lived, tenacious and determined to the last - qualities that served him well as he blazed a trail through life. He was born towards the end of WWII in Tonbridge, England, to Jean Evelyn Elsie (Nichol) and Alastair McMurdo McNeil of St. John's, Newfoundland. The family moved back to Newfoundland in 1945, and Jeremy spent a happy childhood in Corner Brook, before returning to England for his schooling. He attended Lancing College in West Sussex, where he was known more for his sporting prowess – representing the school at cricket, swimming and fencing – than his intelligence. Jeremy returned to Canada for his further education, graduating with an Honours degree in Zoology from The University of Western Ontario in 1969 and a PhD in Entomology from North Carolina State University in 1972, where he won the outstanding graduate award. He accepted a position in the Biology Department at Université Laval in Quebec City, teaching his courses in French – completely belying comments by his teachers at Lancing College who noted at the time that Jeremy's ability in science did not match his enthusiasm, and that he had no talent for languages. In 2004, after 30 years at Laval, Jeremy returned to Western as The Helen Battle Professor of Chemical Ecology, a position he held until his death. In 2014, Jeremy received the Distinguished University Professor Award for his contributions to Western. He was recognised internationally as an eminent research scientist, publishing hundreds of papers, holding many positions of distinction and receiving countless accolades and awards. These include, among many others, President of the Royal Society of Canada, the Humboldt Research Fellowship in Germany, and the Order of Canada for his services to education. He was a passionate and enthusiastic educator his whole life, an ambassador equally at ease with everyone from VIPs to children. He received several national awards for his outreach activities, often saying the publication that he was most proud of was What is an Insect, a children's book he co-wrote with Let's Talk Science which has been translated into five languages, and is used as a teaching aid in schools across Canada. Jeremy was known as The Bug Man and was rarely seen without one of his trademark insect-related tee shirts – he had over 500 of them, which are to be catalogued and sold to raise money for charity. He was a world traveller, and amassed an art (and mask) collection from the countries he visited, was a passionate photographer with a quirky eye, and a fabulous gardener. Many have benefitted from his generosity, and many more have enjoyed his wry wit, quick mind and ready humour. He was a great conversationalist and raconteur, and never lost an opportunity for sharing a bottle or several of good wine from his cellar. Jeremy will be missed dearly by his partner, Shelley Yeo; sons, Jamie (Hanh) and Chris (Karly); grandchildren, Morgan and Connor; sister, Deborah (Mike); and Shelley's daughter, Rebeca Morrison (Glenn Young), and grandchildren, Ema and Luc. Jeremy's passing will also be felt by his extended family, and by countless friends and colleagues from around the globe. Details for a celebration of Jeremy's life will be announced at a later date. So sad to hear the passing of Jeremy. When he was a young boy he lived for a short time in Tonbridge Kent UK. I lived a few houses from him and we became good friends, getting up to the usual trouble young boys did in the mid fifties.
I never knew how but Jeremy was a good Poker player and taught me how to play the game!
I don´t know if he taught me to play properly all I know is he nearly won almost every game! A great friend. Rest in peace.

Professor McNeil was a wholehearted, engaging professor. He was down to earth, honest, and fundamentally kind. Not only do I mourn his life, but also the impact he was having on his students. Sitting in his lectures I felt like science was the most beautiful and noble pursuit in the world. He inspired me to follow core passion instead of logic despite the inconvenience of failure in the midst of a meticulously planned future. He represented authenticity, interest, and honesty in my eyes. He was the only person I´d met who described passion, even without natural academic affinity, as a valuable thing. He was one of my bio professors in the 2023 fall semester and I am so incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from his research and life experiences through that class. Professor McNeil came across as a friendly mentor rather than an imposing all-seeing professor and his impact will be felt by me and by my peers for a long time.

Professor Jeremy McNEIL was my professor for the last unit in biology in December 2023. Sitting in his class and listening to him talk, I knew he was passionate about his work and wanted the best for his students. He was always trying to make the class laugh and made sure we had a good laugh in biology when the students were stressed for exams. Which, I am extremly grateful for. I also want to highlight and thank him for his amazing career and accomplishments in his life that led so many students to success. He has taught many valuable lessons to students in class, which has made us understand the meaning of life and the very success that we strive for. The cherished and inspiring memories that every friends, family and students had with him will be always in our hearts. I send my deepest sincere condolences to his friends and family in this time. He will be missed and his legacy will inspire everyone as we move towards the future. Thank you so much Professor for everything you have done in this lifetime, rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to Professor McNeil´s family and friends . I had the honour of being in his biology lectures in my first year of university. He was a great teacher and always knew how to have fun. He always made jokes in lectures and taught us valuable life lessons from time to time.

I am deeply saddened to hear about Dr. McNeil´s passing. This news breaks my heart, especially as it comes just a night before my Ecology final; Dr. McNeil was the primary reason I chose to take this course this summer at Western University. He was one of my first and favourite university professors, and it was a true privileged having him as my professor during the 2023 Fall term.

I write this message to express Dr. McNeil´s impact on myself and my fellow peers. He was relatable, knowledgeable, had an amazing sense of humor, and made me feel seen with his immense patience when going over difficult course concepts with me, despite his very busy schedule. He will always remain one of the best educators I have ever had. It was a huge honour to have known and interacted with Dr. McNeil.

My sincere condolences to his loved ones; may your hearts be filled with wonderful memories of all the joyful times shared with him. It is assured that Dr. McNeil is in a better place now.

Professor Mcneil was an amazing man, and such a lovely prof. I had him for my first semester at Western University, and could confidently say that he was a kind, funny, and lively soul. Since the start, I remember him being incredibly honest about his tough journey, allowing everyone to feel supported, and less alone. I thank him for all those hilarious lecture comments, and for brightening the days of everyone he taught. My sincere condolences, may he rest in peace.

Jeremy was a wonderful friend and collaborator in both Chemical Ecology and Academy of Science activities. We shared an irreverent approach to boring and stuffy aspects of formal occasions. He will be sorely missed. My heartfelt sympathy to all of his family members -I hope that their loss is moderated to some degree by the esteem with which he was held by his collaborators and friends.

I am sorry to learn of Jeremy's passing. He was a wonderful person, brilliant academic and teacher. During my stint as VP Research and Provost at Western. Jeremy was one of my favourite people. We had many enjoyable coffees and lunches discussing bugs and the world. He fought his lymphoma with grace and grit. My sympathies to his family.
