I took a one-on-one reading seminar with Jerome in his office in 1973-74. I was terrified of him, with his proper accent, so I always read the 2-3 books and several articles he assigned me each week and came eminently prepared. Those readings and my conversations with this eminent scholar (and kind gentleman) still form the core of my understanding of the opening of China to the outside world. Thanks to Jerome, I remain fascinated by China's links to the outside world.
I spoke to him on the phone about 3 years ago. He was already blind, but still full of spirit. I miss him.

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years.
May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.

I was deeply saddened to learn about Jerome's passing. I have known him for nearly three decades. When I started my PhD program at the University of Toronto in 1991, he was just about to retire from his Professorship at York University. We spent a lot of time together, conversing about miscellaneous subjects from the East to the West, from history to the present, from food to wine, from politics to literature and arts, from life to death, He never ceased to amaze me with his exceptional erudition, his cultural taste, his elegant demeanor, his hospitality towards people, and his modesty he was truly a gentleman. I miss him a lot.
