Joan ATWOOD Obituary

JOAN MARIE ATWOOD January 13, 1939 - July 7, 2022 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Joan on July 7, 2022. At 83 years old, she was still cheerful and independent, and she died peacefully in her sleep as she had hoped. Joan was the loving Aunt of Lyn, Janice, Cheryl (Tom), Bruce (Tania), Barb (Steve) and Colin (Julie). Also the proud Great Aunt of Alexandra, Stephanie and Katharine; Katie and Susie; Kristin, Natalie (Jared) and Derek (Stephanie); and Maddie and Sarah. She was also very proud and excited to be Great Great Aunt to baby Miles. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Stella and Ira Atwood of Fort Erie, Ontario; her brother, Ken of Toronto; and her sister-in-law, Pam also of the GTA. Joan grew up in Fort Erie and graduated from Fort Erie High School in 1957. She was the only woman in her class to go on to university. She attended Queen's University to obtain her BA and BPHE degrees. Joan joined the Girl's Physical and Health Education Department at Northern Secondary School in Toronto in 1962. She remained at the same school for 33 years before retiring in 1995. During her years at Northern she coached basketball, volleyball, and track and field, winning City Championships in all three sports. In honour of the positive influence Joan had on both intramural and extramural sports for female athletes in Toronto schools, when she retired in 1995, Northern Secondary renamed their top female athlete award "The Joan Atwood Grade 12 Female Athlete of the Year Award". While teaching in Toronto, Joan - aka "Digger" - went home each summer to play softball for the Senior Women's Team in Fort Erie. This team had a very impressive record winning four Provincial Championships, one Canadian Championship and Silver Medals at the Pan Am Games in 1967. Joan also enjoyed wilderness canoeing, kayaking and camping, as well as sailing, cottaging and badminton. Visitation and Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 27th at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Ave West, Toronto. Visitation will begin at 12 p.m., and a service will take place at 1 p.m. Reception to follow. Cremation has already taken place. At Joan's request, interment will be at McAffee Cemetery in Fort Erie, Ontario in the Family Plot.

Ms Atwood was an inspiration to the girls of Northern Secondary. She knew that athletics would give us skills and teamwork experience that we would need for life. She encouraged us to believe in ourselves and reach for the stars. My condolences for your loss.

We were beyond lucky to have Joan as a resident at Four Elms retirement. She brought us smiles constantly and shared wisdom and laughs we will not forget. Thankful to have known such a wonderful and strong woman.

We spent all of our summer vacations at the cottage, almost all of the time with Joan, for over 20 years. She watched our boys grow up there, helping us teach them about nature, kayaking, swimming, jumping off the sun deck, etc. We will be forever grateful for her gentle kindness to our family, all the laughs, the stories and fun. Our deepest condolences to her family, she loved to share your successes with us throughout the years. She will be missed and forever loved by our family.

There are not enough words to share the memories of half a century. Meals prepped and shared, recipes exchanged, Joan driving the boat when we went fishing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking to waterfalls, playing euchre and laughing about not so secret signals, watching/listening to sports, hearing about the annual grey cup party and her brilliant ability to connect with Anne Murray for a special message to the group, seasonal Toronto Symphony series since I was in university, plays, boating on the Galetea, decorating the Christmas tree in Toronto and stringing popcorn and cranberries, hearing about the adventures of her travels and canoe trips .. the list goes on. I'm lucky to have had Joan in my life and I can say for certain she lived hers to the fullest. She loved spending time with her family and had many stories to share - especially about the grand meals with the Atwood clan. Sending love and hugs. My condolences to you all.

David and I send our deepest sympathies to the Atwood family. Donna heard some stories about Aunt Joan from Cheryl when we were both at Queen's. I know she will be missed.

Many years ago, I was fortunate to have Miss Atwood as a Physical Education teacher. She was a very positive influence with her kind and friendly demeanor and her ability to share her knowledge and skills.

Joan (Digger) and I lived together with 3 others at 199 King St. in Kingston in our final year of Phs. Ed. We played Intercollegiate Volleyball and Basketball together and won the Intercollegiate Basketball Champiomship in 1961 with Digger as our Captain. I have been trying to find her and am so sorry to hear this news.

"Digger" was in her final year of PE at Queen's when I arrived as first-year student in the same field. She was a kindly role model and offered great advice and support to us newbies. Rest in peace Digger

You always remember the teachers that were nice and inspired you. Ms Atwood was one of them, I'm sure she earned her wings many times over.
