JOAN DODINGTON Obituary
(nee Walker) (May 2, 1924 - May 2, 2025) A force to be reckoned with, Thalia died, not surprisingly, on her 101st birthday, from complications from a fall. She will be missed. She was a Class Act. Beloved wife of 61 years to Gordon Edward Dodington (predeceased). Loving mother to Michael (Susan), Brock, Nancy (Anna), Geoff and Alan (Sharon). Sadly missed by grandchildren, Eran (Christine), Lee, Ryan (Jenna), Jessie (Trent), Drew, Katelin (Neil), Ben (Ana), Abrielle (Adam), and Sam; and "great-grans," Nesta, Sol, Rebecca, Charlie, Emilia, Finn, Sophie and Nora. Born in Toronto, the only child of Vira Ethel (nee de Sherbinin) and Dr. Harold Brock Walker, Thalia attended Allenby P.S. and Lawrence Park C.I. During WWII, she trained as a physiotherapist and practiced at Toronto East General Hospital. When she married and began a family, Thalia was saddened to give up her career but dedicated herself to the task at hand... raising five children and loving them unconditionally. She modelled what a strong and inspiring woman looks like by demonstrating daily how to live honourably, to give one's best effort and work hard. She instilled in her children the values of good judgement, perseverance, honesty, courage and kindness. She taught us to be Canadian. Thalia was also a dedicated volunteer, a spunky curler, a valued friend, relative and neighbour. Apart from the loving homes she created, her favourite place of all was the beloved family cottage at Go Home Lake. The family is grateful for the care Mom received at Deer Park Villa in Grimsby and for the exemplary medical care provided at Niagara Health – Marotta Family Hospital in St. Catharines. We share our gratitude for having had Mom in our lives, where she showed us the immense value of family; because in partnership with Dad, they created just that... a loving family legacy. A private family gathering will be held later, as per Mom's wishes. For those wishing to honour her memory, the following charities were meaningful to her: Doctors Without Borders, Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a local foodbank.
