Joan NEGUS Obituary

JOAN NORAH MCINTYRE HURLEY NEGUS (nee Layton) Born June 6, 1924 died September 25, 2018, peacefully with family at her bedside in her 94th year, at her residence in the Glebe Centre, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Joan was born in Montreal, Quebec, to her parents Gilbert and Norah Layton. She was predeceased by husbands, Robert (Bob) McIntyre of Montreal, Quebec, Joseph (Joe) Hurley of Vankleek Hill, Ontario, and Alfred (Alf) Negus of Hamilton, Ontario; by brothers, Philip Layton, the Honourable Robert Layton; and sister, Barbara Elvidge. She is survived by her four children, Diane McIntyre and Jim McIntyre of Ottawa, Barbara McIntyre of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Norah-Lynn McIntyre of Hamilton; her daughter-in-law, Judy McIntyre of Ottawa; her grandchildren, Leia McIntyre, Jessica Lankshear, Brian Lankshear, Stewart McIntyre, Norah McIntyre, Dayna Ritchie, and Kristen Ritchie; her sister-in- law, Doris Layton; brother-in-law, Duncan Elvidge; as well as by many nieces and nephews throughout the Provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Joan lived an active and adventurous life. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion All Stars, dancing overseas following WWII. Her career with Northern Telecom spanned many years in both Montreal and Toronto. She was involved in her communities most recently at the St. Simon's Anglican parish in Oakville, and in the past as a Guide and Brownie leader in Nova Scotia, as a member of the Wentworth Golf and Curling Club of Montreal where she met and subsequently married Joseph Hurley. She and Joe enjoyed many years square and round dancing and following Joe's death, Joan and Alfred Negus found mutual pleasure in their dancing and world travels. One thing that was constant in Joan's busy life, was the joy she shared with a ready smile and greeting. She loved everyone with all her heart and she will live on in the hearts of everyone she touched. You are invited to pay your respects at the Glebe Centre in Ottawa on October 27 between 2 - 3 p.m. and/or attend a memorial service at 3 p.m. that day. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ottawa Glebe Centre and/or the MAB- Mackay Foundation. Joan's family would like to extend its thanks to the many caregivers at the Glebe Centre, Ottawa, including spiritual coordinator, Jim Johnson, with very special thanks for the loving care of Maryvonne Baranyi and Cindy Dunn.
