Joan RANDALL Obituary

JOAN WALWYN RANDALL February 27, 1928 - August 7, 2023 Joan died peacefully in Toronto on August 7, 2023, after a short illness but a long and very productive life. She was born in Toronto and educated at Rosedale Public School, St. Clement's and the University of Toronto (Victoria College) and a member of Alpha Phi. Joan was the daughter of Ruth and Arthur Walwyn and was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Bill Randall; and sisters, Mary Fisher and Pat Walwyn. Joan met Bill in the summer of 1947 in Muskoka and they were married March 17, 1950. They had 3 children Jo (Tom), Will (Heather) and Jan (Jay). Joan kept close ties with her sorority sisters and U of T classmates. She cherished her participation in the book club with whom she shared a wide variety of literature. With two classmates she started the Volunteer Committee at the Royal Ontario Museum. That started a lifelong commitment to volunteerism at the the ROM and U of T. Upon Bill's early death in 1975, Joan dedicated herself fully to volunteerism. She became Chair of the Governing Council at U of T and among other several awards, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Law for her 35 years of volunteerism at the University. Joan also served on the Boards of Halifax Insurance, Templeton Investments and Ridley College. She was a strong advocate for education. Joan has nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one angel. She loved Norwood, her century old cottage on Lake Joe in Muskoka, mostly when filled with her large and spirited family. Many thanks to the staff at the Dunfield, especially those on the 3rd floor, with particular gratitude to Veronica and Joan's wonderful companion, Jean Hardy. Joan, Mom, Granny Joan...we miss you.

Never shy, never without an opinion, always warm and gracious. She lived a wonderful full life and may we all live by her example of giving back. Will miss her giggle. Love to all.

Joan Randall advocated relentlessly for those causes, people, and values she held dear. To be under her wing was a gift because her wisdom, instinct, and judgment were without question. We were lucky to have been neighbours, both in Toronto and Muskoka. We remember Joan and Bill as gracious hosts. We send our condolences to the family.

Joan was an important and influential member of the Governing Council of the University of Toronto in the 1980´s and early `90´s. Her decades of volunteer service to U of T should be remembered.
