Joanne MORROW Obituary

Joanne Morrow, suddenly on Sunday, April 21, 2024. Joanne was at home, alone, preparing for the busy week ahead when she was taken from us far too soon. Joanne was the eldest of four girls, survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Mathew (Richard), Rosalind Morrow, and Catherine Morrow (Norman Nurmi). She was mother to Christos and Adele Gigantes, stepmother to Clea Gigantes, and Gramma-Jo to Liam, Ava and Mirah. Joanne is also survived by her mother, Pat Morrow, 101, a resident of Briton House in Toronto. The family is heartbroken by the sudden loss of our beautiful Jo – a source of humour, artistic and political analysis, imagination, kindness, and fantastic cooking. She will be missed by so many. Joanne was married briefly to David Roffey and moved from Toronto to Ottawa. She remained in Ottawa and began her stellar career as an arts administrator with the Canada Council and later music producer at the National Arts Centre. With her second husband and love of her life, Terry Gigantes, she moved to Paris for five years where she continued her work in the arts and had her two children, Christos and Adele. When they returned to Ottawa, she returned to the Canada Council, becoming head of music. After Terry's untimely death, Joanne moved to Banff to lead the Banff Centre. From there she was poached by Cirque de Soleil where she was in charge of artistic development – with all performing artists in 35 shows and 17 countries reporting to her. She later moved from Montreal to Toronto where she was welcomed by her mother and sisters. She was a frequent travel partner with Rosalind and a source of support for all the family. Joanne's beauty and charm were striking. She was a loving sister, mother, aunt, and grandmother and will be missed terribly. The service in Joanne's honour will be on Friday, May 3 at 3 p.m. at Rosedale United Church.

Joanne, I have just heard about your death, almost a year afterwards. I hope that it was painless and swift. You have been in my life and my heart since I was fifteen or so, and there you will remain, along with so many family memories. Forever with my gratitude, and my love.

Joanne was my "mum-in-law" for a very brief period but a mentor and friend for a good fifteen years of my life. I will always appreciate our long phone calls, during which we would exchange about art, cinema, our pasts, motherhood and so much more.

In ways that she both knew and didn't know, she taught me to stand up for myself, the important of artistic expression in my life and how to male time for it, and she taught me never to settle. She was present when and where my own parents could not be and I will always cherish the good moments.

Onward!

In the grand scheme of life, I only knew Joanne for a short time. She was a beautiful and kind woman. I very much enjoyed our ladies cruise, visits in Florida and her annual trip to Gull Lake, enjoying watching the plethora of birds visiting the feeders around the cottage. She will be missed by us and many. Anne & Mike Black

Joanne was my Godmother. When I was little I used to watch her and Terry. They were so in love and it was obvious. As a little girl I hoped to one day have that kind of love. Joanne was the epitome of class and elegance, balanced with being completely down to earth. I'm still in disbelief. My sincerest condolences to the family.

I met Joanne after she came back from France. Adele was 18 months old. Joanne was the nicest person to work for. She was smart, so intellegent and kind. Joanne and Terry gave me my first car and sent me to driving school. They helped me when I brought my children to Canada. I could go on and on... This sad news breaks my heart. Joanne I am so sorry this happened to you.

I love you and I will miss you,

Our condolences to Joanne´s family. We were just starting out at Banff Centre when Joanne was appointed. She left an indelible impression on us, and always had time and curiosity for her staff- even those of us who were just getting started. She had a terrific laugh, and oh those fur hats and coats commanded attention!

Joanne was a friend who I knew at the Canada Council. She was a delightful person with a wonderful sense of humour. I enjoyed seeing her at the opera every season. She will be missed.

I knew Joanne for many years through the various positions she held. More recently, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with her in Toronto where we had many wonderful conversations and attended concerts together. She was a real lady of class, elegance, and intelligence, and it was a true honour to know her. A light has gone out of the world with her passing.

Joanne was a much-loved friend and a vibrant, sparkling member of our high school "gang" which has stayed connected with each other over the last 60 years. I am heart broken by her passing! My love and condolences go to her family first and foremost---and all those who had the privilege of having her spirit touch theirs.

My sympathies to Joanne´s family and friends. Joanne hired me at the Canada Council in 1999 and was a mentor in my first year. She once told me to `shake things up´ which I tried to do with the job she gave me to set up and run the inter-arts office. I remember her passionate for art and strategic smarts. Rest in peace chère Joanne. You helped many of us along the road... Thank you.
