BELLIVEAU, John Edward 1913-1998
Mr John Edward "Ned" Belliveau, of Moncton died on Thursday, March 26 at the Moncton Hospital. He was 84. Born in Moncton, he was the son of the late Phileas and Anna (Leger) Belliveau. A noted author, journalist and political advisor, Mr. Belliveau began his journalistic career with the Moncton Transcript in the 1930's and went on to become a senior reporter and columnist with The Windsor Star, Toronto Star, and the Star Weekly. In 1958, he assisted John Wintermeyer in his campaign run for Premier of Ontario and subsequently became Acting Director of the Liberal Party of Ontario. In 1960, he joined Tandy Advertising Limited of Toronto as Senior Vice President, Public Affairs. In that capacity he was invited to manage the Hon. Louis Robichaud's successful campaign bid for Premier of New Brunswick. He worked closely with Mr. Robichaud on two further campaigns, as well as advising the Hon. Alex Campbell of Prince Edward Island and the Hon. Gerald Regan of Nova Scotia in their respective provincial election campaign. In 1962, Mr. Belliveau did some work privately for the Hon. Lester B. Pearson, leader of the national Liberals, and in 1963 was his speech writer and campaign advisor. He published his first book, the Coffin Murder Case in 1956 after having covered this famous murder trial as a journalist for the Toronto Star. After retiring in 1971, he authored several more books including a twovolume history of Moncton called "The Monctonians". His other works include "Little Louis and the Giant K.C" as well as shorter histories of Shediac and Pointe du Chene; a personal history of the Belliveau family; a history of Albert Smith; a history of the Moncton Club; and a history of the Sumner family of Moncton. Mr. Belliveau is survived by his wife Gertrude (nee Pujolas); five sons, William (Shediac), Michael and his wife Rita (Moncton), Richard (Ottawa), Tim and his wife Suzanne (Riverview) and Peter and his wife Lynn (Moncton); two sisters, Catherine (Mrs. Allison Dysart) of Cocagne and Nan (Mrs. Pat Driscoll) of Moncton; two brothers Frank and his wife Kaye (Moncton) and Gerard and his wife Shiela (Edmunston); nine grandchildren, Tim, Paul, Anne, Jacqueline, Joseph, Peter, Suzanne, Patrick and Rachael; and two great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Devynn. He was pre-deceased by a granddaughter Marie-Adele and a third brother Leonard Belliveau of Moncton. He was greatly loved by his family and widely respected for his jounalistic and historical works. He was always proud to point out that his family retirement home in Shediac has been the favourite visiting site of five generations of Belliveaus. Visiting hours will be from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, March 27 at Tuttle Bros. Funeral Home, Moncton. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Bernard's Church, Botsford St. at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 28. In lieu of flowers you may kindly make a donation, if desired, to the Cardiac Care Unit, Moncton Hospital.
