These past few weeks must have been a very difficult time for Dody and the family, our deepest condolences go to them.
It is difficult for us to acknowledge John's passing, Wolf and I still talk about him often. John played a big part in our lives since we moved to Hamilton in 2005 when Wolf joined the Brain-Body Institute. John was a great man, apart from his many professional accomplishments, he was also very caring and approachable. He remembered to follow up with me once for a very small matter because I had asked him. John used to throw a party for people from work from time to time, I still have vivid memories of him handing out drink vouchers at the door and many fun moments we had at those parties.
John had an extraordinary amount of energy, a level even people who were many years younger than him could hardly keep up. He was always very engaged in research work and new ideas. John will be greatly missed by Wolf and me.

I met John when I arrived at McMaster in1969 and we both had a laboratory base in the same building . John had a growing research commitment, whilst I became heavily involved in clinical and educational roles. But in later years his role as Dean showed his leadership skills in administration as well as cutting edge research. At this time I became Associate Dean of education and found great support from John as he fostered the major educational growth that was essential to the mission of the Faculty.
The news of his passing brings into focus the importance of the role he played in so many aspects of it´s growth and development . His impact will be lasting

John was a fabulous mentor and friend to so many and across many disciplines. A true original - in every sense - he challenged ideas - and encouraged others to think well outside the box. Always a fascinating conversationalist and so much fun at a party. John was generous and fun loving. Immensely proud of his family, he and Dody were truly perfect for each other. I will forever miss john and be immensely grateful to him.

I met John some time in 2001 shortly after the start of my research career at McMaster University, which was a few years since John´s retirement. Nonetheless, I never truly had a sense that John had actually "retired" until lately when John was really "retired". I had a couple of personal contacts with John on some challenging issues in the past few years; I valued his advices. John was a model scientist and a remarkable leader.

I had the great privilege of meeting John when I was working in the purchasing department at McMaster university.
Later when I left Mac and open a store in Dundas he and Dody were regular customers and both enjoyable to talk to.

I met John almost 20 years ago when his son Jimson married my daughter Johanna. Since then we have met almost every year. We had planned to meet in August, but shortely before we left Sweden, I heard that he had passed away. John har many skills beside his professional. He was funny and easy to deal with. We had interesting discussions every time we met and he had always new projects ongoing. He hated retirement said to me he wanted to contiue to work until he died.
It is a tradegy that both John and Jimson passed away within a couple of months. I miss them both.

John played a significant part in my life and career. Although we came from the same part of London, UK and attended the same medical school, we did not meet till I came to McMaster in 1975. He befriended me and John would organize "soccer" games on the lawn on campus before marching us off to the faculty club for beers in our muddied boots. He was the man, along with Ed Daniel, the behind a major grant award in 1985 that led to the prominence of intestinal research at McMaster and ultimately the establishment of a wold class institute - the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research. I will miss him as a friend and colleague of enormous and wide ranging talent.

Much love to you all, in this profoundly sad time for your family. I remember hilarity at the cottage, big lives, and so so so much mischief and laughter. Xxxooo
