John BOSLEY Obituary

HON. JOHN WILLIAM BOSLEY May 4, 1947- April 28, 2022 John died peacefully in the ICU at Mt. Sinai Hospital following heart failure. He was predeceased by his parents, Murray and Mary Bosley; and his brother, David Murray Bosley. He leaves behind his cherished daughter, Yanette, "Yani"; and his beloved partner, Mary. John attended Upper Canada College, Trinity College, University of Toronto and York University. He worked briefly for Bosley Real Estate before entering politics. John served on Metro Council from 1974 to 1978. In 1979 he was elected to the House of Commons as Progressive Conservative Member in Don Valley West and was re-elected twice. In 1984 he was named Speaker of the House of Commons, a position which he held for two tumultuous years before resigning. He wrote that he had never felt more honoured than to serve as Speaker of the House and to administer its affairs. In 1988 he was re-elected MP in Don Valley West until 1993. For the next 20 years until retirement, John turned his attention to advising on parliamentary governance and capacity building projects for international governance organizations in African countries including Ethiopia, Zambia, Rwanda, Liberia and Ivory Coast. John was an avid reader; he loved nothing more than a lively debate. He was passionate about music and singing. He was a proud member of the University Club and Rosedale Golf Club. He thrived on being part of the League Team. A highly competitive golfer, he "played to win". John will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a wonderful, caring, gentle man. A celebration of John's life will be held at The Toronto Golf Club, 1305 Dixie Road, Mississauga on Wednesday, May 11 from 4-6 p.m. Donations in John's memory may be made to Parkinson Canada or a charity of your choice.

I have fond memories of spending a week or so with John and Mary on a wonderful golf trip playing courses in Cape Breton and PEI. We kept in touch after that and enjoyed great banter on life and it´s meaning. Very much enjoyed his quick wit and humour. I only wish we had met earlier. Offering our prayer of peace for Mary and family.

John and I were neighbours and grew up together in our early formative years. In the past few years we reconnected with John and Mary, looking forward to opportunities to spend time together. I do remember golf at Rosedale as juniors and even then I needed to bring John's game down to my level to have a chance. John was a keystone for a Foreign Affairs reading group we created and I will miss his insights. Mary and I offer our condolences to Mary and Yani as John's passing is a great loss to us all.

I am truly saddened to hear of John's passing. He was a kind and warm person that extended his time and energy for nothing in return other service of humanity. A wise and foresighted person that shared his time, energy in order to support the suffering. My mother joins me in offering her condolences, he will be dearly missed.

l am deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. We served as colleagues in the House of Commons between 1988-993 and on the Foreign Affairs Standing Committee, which he chaired with great skill. Despite the differences in our party affiliations, we became fast and enduring friends. More recently, we reconnected and John provided great guidance to me as Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Former Parliamentarians. For me, the guidance was important, but secondary. The real joy was his company, which I had hoped would continue longer. He always spoke lovingly of his partner, Mary and his daughter, Yani to whom I offer my heartfelt sympathy on their loss.

I am so sorry to read of John´s passing. I just received a nice note from John after my husband passed March 18. John and Bud were roommates for a time in Ottawa. My condolences.

Sad news about a fine man. I have known John since Upper Canada. And while we didn't connect all that often in later years due to my living in Los Angeles, I always had my good memories. He will be missed by many. RIP.

John and I were House of Commons colleagues and -- to me, more important -- personal friends. As I noted in my political memoir ("Not My Party"), he was a true gentleman who spent many a "beer-soaked all-nighter playing Monopoly" with me and other friends at my seaside home in PEI back in our parliamentary days. John was, as his obituary rightly said, a real competitor. He loved to win, which he usually did. I was deeply saddened by his passing but will long remember him with fondness.

My heartfelt condolences to Mr. Bosley´s family and friends. I had the honour to work at the House when he was Speaker and was inspired by him as an ardent defender of Parliament.
May he rest in peace.

John was a parliamentary colleague whom I respected and liked very much. He was a man with a sharp mind and a most pleasant manner. I admired him as Speaker of the House of Commons.

John was an ideal progressive, urban MP of the 1980's. Young, idealistic, energetic, pro-choice, abolitionist, pro-bilingual, he thought deeply about issues and ran positive campaigns, winning four times by large margins. He knew that for the PC Party to fly it needed both wings. And he kept the beard against conventional political advice!

John Carmichael, former MP, Don Valley West (2011-2015)

I am deeply saddened to hear of John´s passing. I enjoyed speaking with John on political issues particularly as a successor to him in Don Valley West and he always had advice. He made a significant contribution to Canada and will be missed. My sympathy to Mary and his family.

John was a regular at the National Press Club when MPs and reporters used to socialize together. John was always the first to get a singalong going at the piano. His quick wit and gentle manner will be missed.

John was a tour-de-force in our Singing With Parkinson's group, raising the bar on my vocal volume expectations! He will be missed.
