Saskatoon. He was born in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan on January 10, 1921, the eldest of a family of seven children. After studying Arts at St. Peter's College in Muenster and receiving his B.A. degree from St. Thomas More College at the University of Saskatchewan (1940), he studied medicine at the University of Manitoba where he received his M.D. as the Gold Medalist in 1945. After establishing a general practice in Saskatoon, he completed his post-graduate studies in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Manitoba and then moved to Edmonton, Alberta where he conducted with great distinction and enthusiasm a specialty practice from 1953 until 1982. He divided his time between his family, his Church, and his medical practice: these were the passions of his life. It was never too late at night for any of his patients to call him. All their triumphs or difficulties were of keen interest to him and there was no limit to the unfailing support he provided both to them and to his family. Everything he did was pervaded by his generosity of spirit. In 1983, he retired to Deep Cove in Sidney B.C. Though it was a huge transition for him to experience the quiet life of Vancouver Island after a lifetime as a hyperactive doctor, he soon came to enjoy immensely his years of retirement. He became an'armchair gardener' (largely supervising others working on the spectacular grounds of his waterfront home), developed a love of rhododendrons, which led to his Presidency of the local Rhododendron Society, and of course, he never ceased enjoying a lively social life with his wide circle of family and friends. He passionately followed and relished every turn in his children's and his friends' lives. Whether in person or by telephone, mail, fax or email, he kept in close touch with everyone; and by virtue of his efforts, he kept all in his complex and extended circle of family and friends well informed. He was a large man in every sense of the word-both in body and in spirit. He fit Chesterton's description of a man who never lost a 'fury for life'. He leaves a large hole in the lives of innumerable people who shall continue to miss him deeply. May he rest in peace. Special thanks to Dr. Trottershaw of Brentwood Bay, B.C., Dr. Cuthbert of Victoria, B.C., all of the physicians and attendants at the Royal Jubilee Hospital Cancer Clinic and of course, his loving caregiver Mary Grace Dequinon, without whose unfailing care these last few months would have been immeasurably more difficult. Prayers will be said at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 9th at Our Lady of the Assumption Church (7742 West Saanich Road,) . A Requiem Mass will be concelebrated by his two brothers, Father Leo Boyd O.M.I. and Father Ian Boyd C.S.B. at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10th at St. Elizabeth's Church in Sidney, B.C. Letters of condolence may be sent to the family
