John BRIDGMAN Obituary

JOHN H. BRIDGMAN 1940-2023 John Harwood Bridgman was born in Montreal on February 20, 1940. He died in Montreal on January 9, 2023, peacefully and with his family by his side. John was a man with a twinkle in his eye and a wicked sense of humour. His greatest loves were his wife, Pen; his children, Mark and Zoë; his 5 grandchildren; his farm in Vermont; and anything to do with the stock market. John is survived by Pen (his wife of 53 years); his sister, Brenda; his children, Mark (Alisa) and Zoë (Jory deceased); and grandchildren, Samantha, Olivia, Charlotte, Talia and Julian. John went to Lower Canada College (LCC) and then McGill University. He was athletic his whole life. He played football in high school and was an avid member of the Red Birds Ski Club at McGill. He played tennis year round and skied in Quebec, Vermont and Europe. After University, John worked in corporate finance at Greenshields, where he enjoyed the close-knit camaraderie of the Montreal-based firm. When Richardson Greenshields was taken over, he worked as a portfolio manager at RBC, then at 3 Macs. He was a councillor for the City of Westmount for eight years and worked hard to raise funds for Westmount Public Library. John loved his Retreat Farm on Bridgman Road, in South Richford, Vermont. The farm was his passion and he and Pen created a beautiful property, where John enjoyed endlessly fixing fences and playing on his many tractors. He was especially proud of the organic maple syrup farm he created, tapping more than 2,000 trees of carefully managed sugar bush. For many years, John, Pen and their children and grandchildren also spent time on the pink sandy beaches of Harbour Island in the Bahamas. John and Pen would like to thank the wonderful carers, nurses and doctors who provided comfort and care over the last several months. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to in John's memory to: Montreal General Hospital, in Memory of John Bridgman : Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), in Memory of John Bridgman. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Dear Pen!

I wonder whether you will see this as it is via The Globe and Mail´s Memories and Condolences - no longer available via The Montreal Gazette.
Every now and again I have googled to see what the Bridgmans of Westmount might be up to.
Today, March 11, 2025 was one of those times and I am shocked and saddened to see an obituary for John! from 2023.
I am so very sorry.

I have always remembered your refrain of `As I said to John ...´ in recounting news xx
It made him very present even though I didn´t meet him many times at all.

Too, I recall when I was housesitting for my ex printmaking professor Judy Kelly on Irvine Street, (near Rockhead´s Paradise I seem to remember), John remarked on the presence of a Ms. magazine! Feminism was in full swing!
Also your wonderful Retreat Farm in Vermont and the Saab deftly handling abrupt acceleration on substantial snow when a lesser model was being a tail-gater.
Also your Westmount home when you were renovating. I think I quipped that day it was looking very early Blitz.

Well, here´s to your handsome and charismatic husband and your loveliness as a couple

I hope you and Mark and Zoë and families are all well

With much love from the other side of the world.

Your old `Eaton-ian´ friend

We will miss our good neighbour on Bruce Avenue. His dedication to our community was greatly appreciated, as exemplified by his 8 years of service as a Municipal Councillor.
