CLELLAND, John Thomas Huyton Of Savannah Georgia, aged 75, died peacefully at Spanish Oaks on January 15, 2012. Born in Glasgow, Scotland June 11, 1936, immigrated at age 10 with his parents to Australia, attended Ballart College and graduated the Ballart School of Mines in 1957 and was awarded the Mica Smith scholarship from the Carbould Bequest. In Australia, he worked at Kalgooli and at Mount Isa and Broken Hill where he met Loretta Shirley R.N. who became his wife. They then immigrated to Canada where John was hired by Falconbridge to develop a method of processing the nickel deposits in the Dominican Republic. After 16 months at the Falconbridge laboratory in Toronto he was transferred to a pilot project in the D.R. The process was patented in the 1970's and John was appointed President and General Manager of Falconbridge Dominicana. In that role he established a foundation to aid and enhance the culture, education and living standards of the Dominican people. After he retired he and Loretta settled in The Landings, Savannah Georgia where he became a volunteer First Responder and Fire Chief and a committed golfer. John is survived by his wife, two daughters Joanne, Woodbridge, Ont. and Denise, Vancouver, B. C. and one granddaughter.
