John DUFFY Obituary

JOHN DUFFY John Duffy, loving father and husband, visionary strategist, prize-winning author, city-builder, and founding partner of StrategyCorp Inc. died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at his home in Toronto. Born on November 5, 1963 in Toronto, John was a proud alumnus of the University of Toronto Schools and Trinity College, University of Toronto. Duffy was renowned for his creativity and brilliance as a strategist and communicator. He was a veteran of many political and community campaigns. He was a volunteer advisor to former Prime Minister Paul Martin, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, former Ontario Premier Bob Rae, and Toronto Mayor John Tory. He was the author of Fights of Our Lives: Elections, Leaders, and the Making of Canada, which is considered one of the best and most accessible books ever written on Canadian politics and history. He will be remembered for his passion, depth of knowledge, overwhelming humanity, advocacy for the many issues he cared about, compassion, and warmth. He channeled his love for Toronto and Canada into making these places as great as he dreamed they could be. Above all, he was a deeply generous and massively loving father to Martine and Simone, husband to Madame Justice Jill Presser, brother to Elain Evans and Aubrey Duffy, son to Dennis and the late Mary Ann Duffy, colleagues, and his many friends. Just heard the sad, sad news today and I am still having difficulty believing that John is gone. I babysat John and his sisters many years ago and they quickly became treasured friends. In those old `John and Elaine´ stories that I made up to keep the kids distracted, John was always a take- charge but kind and generous hero. And so he was. ... forever in my memories and in my heart.
Sending so much love to all of you my lovely Duffy and Duffy connected family.

John was a passionate and committed visionary. I enjoyed growing up with him through youth politics where I was exposed to his keen intellect and his ability to impact peoples opinions through his presence and his writing.

We agreed some of the time, we disagreed at other times but I always respected who he was and what he stood for. He was confident, and fearless- a leader in every sense of the word

I learned so much from him. And while we were never close, he made an impact on me in ways I only recently appreciated.

His legacy is great and his impact will be felt beyond his time with us.

Martine, Simone and Jill - you are all in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. Martine - your dad was such a proud dad during your time and through all your accomplishments at UTS. Can´t even begin to imagine what you´re feeling or going through. Hopefully the messages here and elsewhere of love and support and happier times will help you in some small way.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Jill, Martine, Simone and the entire Duffy family. It was such a pleasure to meet and welcome you as our neighbours when you came to `Snowylands´ in Stratford. Yours is a vibrant, loving family, and John, clearly touched and enriched the lives of those around him. We count ourselves fortunate for having met him, and the poorer for not having been able to know him better. Wishing you all peace and courage as you bid farewell to your loved one.

We met John - and Jill and subsequently Martine - at our birthing class in 2000. We lost touch over the years, but we remember incredible conversations and commiserations about any number of topics. While the girls were babies and toddlers, many of those conversations centred around being new parents. John was a devoted and spectacularly proud parent. The love for his family was so evident in every one of his fantastic smiles.

We send our love to Jill, Martine, Simone and the rest of John's family and friends. We wish there were words we could share to immediately temper your grief. Memories of him will help.

Much love,
Heather, David & Rissa
