JOHN GRAND Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John William Grand on Monday, November 18, 2024 at the age of 84. Born on April 13, 1940, to James Grand and Helen Boggild (nee Hartwick), John was the second oldest of six siblings – James Grand (deceased), Robert Grand, Richard Grand (deceased), Rosemary Grand and Martin Kent. John was known for his strong will, unwavering determination, and his love and support for his family and friends. He spent his childhood growing up in Lawrence Park and his summers surrounded by loved ones in Muskoka, John's true home, where he would eventually marry his husband, David Grand, on Elsinore Island in Lake Joseph in 2009. John attended the Ontario College of Art and Design. He later applied his skills at his family's business, Grand & Toy, where he ran the Furniture and Design divisions as Vice President until he retired in 1987. Following his career at Grand & Toy, John was involved in the Real Estate business in Toronto and Muskoka. Later John applied his talents to multiple projects that proved successful including the restoration of several properties in Toronto, Ottawa and Muskoka. In recent years, John enjoyed traveling the world with his husband, settling for winters at their home in Florida, and spending summers in Muskoka, always surrounded by good music, a glass of wine, and gratitude for all he had. He was never one to shy away from helping others, asking someone to join him on the dance floor, watching the tennis finals for Wimbledon, walking his four-legged companion, or enjoying a sunset cruise. John will forever hold a special place in so many people's lives and hearts. His appreciation for life was only amplified by the many physical struggles he had to endure towards the end. John never lost his sense of purpose or gave up; he always carried forward. John was a fine gentleman in every way. A celebration of life will be held in Muskoka next summer where we will raise our glasses in honour of a loving husband, a loyal friend and a caring family member. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Campfire Circle or the Alzheimer Society.

In less then six months, this is too much. My sincerest condolences I extend to Rob and Rosemary. Your three brothers are a great tribute to your father, James R Grand Sr. I never met you, David, but be comforted in knowing that your John is now with Jim and Richie.

Condolences to Johns family and friends. Special memories of a kind generous man. We met many years ago at D&P Florist in Rosedale. John would buy lunch or pick up the broom when he visited.
Once he made a comment that stuck with me all these years! You are only as good as your people, he said. John was absolutely right!
Good Speed John.
