John HAMILTON Obituary



HAMILTON, John Drennan, MD, FRCPS.
Peacefully at age 91 in Vancouver, B.C. on Tuesday, November 5, 2002. Son of the late James Henry Hamilton, M.D. and Mary Stearns Edwards; father of Suzanne, Douglas (Judy White), Jane (Bob Walker), and Mariah Doone; grandfather of Colin and Olivia Walker and Benson and Tess Hamilton. Predeceased by his sisters, Joan and Margery, and his wife, Doonie Hamilton.
Born in Revelstoke, BC September 22, 1911, John became an accomplished educator and administrator in the field of medicine. He studied at UBC, the University of Toronto, Cambridge, and Johns Hopkins. He served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps from 1940 to 1945. John began his teaching career as assistant professor of pathology at McGill University in 1945. In 1946, he was made professor and head of the Queen's Department of Pathology. In 1951 he became head of the University of Toronto's Pathology Department. In 1961, he was made Dean of Medicine; in 1966, Vice-President of Health Sciences, and in 1972, Vice-Provost.
John also served as pathologist-in-chief at the Toronto General Hospital from 1951-61 and later served as a trustee there, as well as at Sunnybrook Hospital, the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, Princess Margaret Hospital, and the Addiction Research Foundation. He was consultant pathologist to the Hospital for Sick Children, Sunnybrook Hospital, Women's College Hospital, and the Ontario Department of Health. He was a director at Connaught Laboratories in Toronto and worked with the National Research Council, and the Ontario Heart Foundation.
He was especially pleased to be awarded an Honorary Degree from the University of Nigeria for his work there. In retirement, John returned to the west and the mountains he loved so well. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Toronto. Thanks to Dr. Briggs and the staff at South Granville Park Lodge for their kindness.
A reception will be held 1 - 4 p.m. Thursday, November 14 at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of B.C.
