John HARNEY Obituary

JOHN PAUL LUDGER HARNEY Our dear John Paul left us October 4, 2021, surrounded by his loving family in Picton, ON. He was born February 2, 1931 in Quebec City to Blanche Lemieux and William Harney. He received his MA from Queen's University and in 1972 was elected to Parliament as the NDP member for Scarborough West. Fluently bilingual, he was a published poet, member of the CFB Trenton Pipe Band and Picton Legion Pipe Band, skilled sailor and professor of English at the Collège Militaire Royal and the Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph. He taught English and Humanities and co-created the first Canadian Studies course at York University's Atkinson College. John Paul was a founder of the NDP, elected Chef du NPD-Quebec in 1985, and twice ran for the federal NDP leadership. He was a frequent electoral pundit on Radio-Canada/CBC and proudly served as part of a delegation of retired MP's sent to oversee and support fair elections abroad. John Paul was a loving Dad and Grandpapa and his humour, intellect and love of life will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by children: Michèle (John), William (Beverley), Katherine, Julian (Kim) and their mother, Julia, and Jessica and her mother, Elizabeth; and his grandchildren: Joshua, Lauren, Benjamin, Regan, Pauline, William and Raphael and great-granddaughters, Cameron and Charlotte. Dearly missed by brother, Mike and his wife, Anne; sister, Deanna; and sister-in-law, Anne Lowe. Predeceased by his sister, Theresa. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at H.J. McFarland Memorial Home for their unwavering compassionate and professional care of John Paul. Messages of condolence c/o Rushnell Family Services: [email protected]. I knew John and Julia and their young family when they lived in Guelph. My dad, Walter Martin and John joined the English Department at the Agricultural College at the same time, in 1961. I was 11, my siblings, Jane and David younger. We had arrived in Guelph from South Africa just before term started and we had no family here. It was John and Julia who invited us for Christmas Day.....and turned what might have been a lonely Christmas
into a wonderful celebration....we have never forgotten their generosity and their welcome. I remember a household full of fun and music. I was sorry to hear such a rich life had ended......but I'm sure John is playing music somewhere. Love to you all, Mary Martin oxo

I met John, many years ago, on the Toronto Waterfront aboard the his goelette, "Canari". While, when warranted, he was not above engaging in a Pier Six brawl, he recognized the best qualities in each of the waterfront local denizens. It is an understatement to say he was fluent in French and English. His command of both languages was meticulously thorough. I am pleased to have known him.

Our condolences to the family. John Paul lived a long interesting life & we were fortunate to know him.

Our favorite memory of John Paul is of Thanksgiving weekend the year he bought Nagual and was sailing her back & forth across Adolphus Reach, much to our envy. We live diagonally across the Reach west of the ferry, in those years the summer ferry stopped running prior to Thanksgiving. The ferry line-up made it impractical for us to go to PEYC to use our sailboat. I took a great picture of John Paul sailing Nagual that weekend and remember his displeasure when I met him at the yacht club on a subsequent Friday evening & told him I had accidentally deleted it from my camera before printing a copy for him. Brian greatly enjoyed summer darts evenings at Stone Mill. One evening when he was the first to arrive, John Paul proudly gave him a tour of his home and recounted the history of the building.
