John HARTLEY Obituary

Passed away peacefully, in his 96th year, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at Hospice Georgian Triangle. John was the loving husband of Shirley Kathleeen Hartley (nee Palin). They celebrated 74 years of married life in February of this year. Predeceased by his sisters, Barbara and Betty. Devoted father of John (Louise), Paul (Patricia) and Jeffrey (Lindsay). Treasured grandfather of Scott, Laura (Melissa), Christopher (Sarah), Joshua (Cea), Ryan (Jessica), Sanderson (Suzanne) and McKay (Rachel). Great-grandfather of Jonathan, Peyton, Brooke, Connor, Orin, Jason, James and Leilu. We carry Barb in our hearts. He will also be remembered by his many nieces and nephews. John and Shirley met at the age of 16, married at 21, and raised three (beautiful) boys in Don Mills. John thoroughly enjoyed his business career, spending 35 years at the Ontario Caterpillar dealership. He began sweeping floors in the warehouse and ended his time there as Vice President. He also spent 15 years in senior financial roles with one of southern Ontario's largest paving contractors. In his spare time, he enjoyed working in his gardens and immersing himself in life on the farm. John and Shirley both gave of their time as volunteers serving the community. John recently finished serving 35 years as a Trustee on the Pension Board of the International Union of Operating Engineers. John's life will be celebrated in a private family gathering and every day going forward. The family would like to pass on a huge thank you to the doctors, nurses, PSWs and volunteers at Campbell House. Their kindness will never be forgotten. Arrangements entrusted to the Chatterson Funeral Home, Collingwood. Remembrances of John may be made to Heritage Community Church, Collingwood, Sheffield Park Black History and Cultural Museum, Clarksburg or The Hospice Georgian Triangle Foundation – Campbell House. I am so sorry for your loss. My mother, Billie Cassidy nee Train, was a good friend of Johnny since elementary school . I went with my mom for a visit to their farm house next to 20 years ago. Enchanted with the property and in particular the trees planted for their children and entertained by the family dog.
Shirley accepted my invitation to come to Ancaster to display and talk about her quilt about the underground railroad and Johnny was with her, they were such a loving supportive couple. My group was fascinated by the quilt and by the stories of the plight of the people fleeing the US for freedom in Canada and their challenges of making this place home
We admired them both for their dedication and passions for all that they accomplished.
Life well lived. Much sympathy for the family and especially Shirley.
