JOHN HASTINGS Obituary

John Edward Hastings, Born March 16, 1942, Collingwood, Ontario, passed away in his home on May 15, 2024. Survived by his niece, Nancy Rodd. John was an intelligent, generous and accomplished man. As a two-term MPP in Ontario and assistant to the Transportation Minister, he impressively passed nine bills through legislation. John served North Etobicoke residents with enthusiasm as both a City Councillor (1988-1995) and as School Board Trustee (2006-2014). He held numerous positions on boards, including Toronto's Hydro Commission, Worker's Compensation Board and was past President of Toronto West Rotary Club. His passions were listening to jazz music, supporting the arts, and fundraising for rotary. A prolific collector of fine art that took as much pleasure purchasing artwork from small community artists and young people as he did from the Group of Seven. May he rest in peace knowing he made a positive impact on so many lives. Please join us in a Celebration of Life Ceremony at the Newediuk Funeral Home, Kipling Chapel, 2058 Kipling Avenue (North of Rexdale Boulevard), on Thursday, June 20, 2024, with visitation from 1 p.m., and a service at 2 p.m. Online condolences at: newediukfuneralhome.com

I work at John´s apartment building. He was always such a bright light in my days, always such a pleasant person and always so respectful. I miss seeing him around here. Rest In Peace John, you are truly missed.

I have many wonderful memories of working with John on the Board of the Ontario Association of Former Parliamentarians. His wisdom, guidance and dedication to our organization was inspiring. It was easy to work with John because he never wore his political stripe on his sleeve.
