MAY 28, 1917 MAY 8, 2009 JOHN EDWIN HODGETTS, PHD Died peacefully at Kingston General Hospital on the evening of May 8 in his 92nd year surrounded by the love of his family; predeceased by his beloved wife Ruth (nee Woodger); deeply missed by his sons Ted (Jane Wilson), Geoff (Cathleen Hoeniger), and his daughter Anne. Much loved Poppa of Geoffrey (Sonya Amin), Melanie, Sarah (A.V. Ramana), Matthew and Paul (their mother, Nancy Melville) and Dana and Julia Lew. Educated at University of Toronto and the University of Chicago, Ted embarked on a long, remarkably diverse and richly productive career as one of Canada's most distinguished Political Scientists. He was an inspiring lecturer to generations of students at Queen's University, University of To ronto, and Memorial and Dalhousie Universities. Principal of Victoria College and later President of Victoria University at University of Toronto, scholar, author of numerous books, some of which were seminal in his field of Public Administration, astute editor of many more, Ted also served on a number of government commissions including the Lambert, Glassco and, in his 90s, the Gomery Commission. He was a Rhodes Scholar, inducted into the Order of Canada and the Royal Society of Canada and was a recipient of the Prestigious Vanier Medal awarded by the Institute of Public Administration of Canada, which also named a literary prize after him. Ted received a number of honorary degrees in his long career, the last of which was perhaps the most meaningful to him, awarded by his alma mater U of T when he was in his 90s. This was the public man; but in the words of his dear friend and colleague of more than 50 years, John Meisel: 'Although a giant among academic and governance practitioners he [was] also a fully realized human being.' A kind, gentle, warm, and diffident man devoted to his family, he took great pleasure in the 'small joys' of his abundant and eclectic pursuits - building boats, whittling, stamp collecting, listening to Artie Shaw and Brahms, reading, birdwatching, swimming and fishing at his Georgian Bay cottage - these endearing enthusiasms reflect the comfort and delight of a life well lived. In accordance with Ted's wishes, no funeral service was held; a memorial celebration of his life will take place at a later date. To the doctors, nurses, and staff of the 10th Floor, Connell Wing of the KGH, our deepest gratitude for their generous and compassionate care during Dad's illness. Donations in Ted's memory to Child Haven International, 19014 Conc. 7, RR 1 Maxville, ON K0C 1T0,
