THE HONOURABLE JOHN DREW HAMMERSLEY HUDSON Q.C., B.A., M.A., P. Eng. (Mining), LLB October 24, 1925 – May 23, 2009 Peacefully, at his treasured Craigleith ski chalet in Collingwood. Drew is survived and mourned by Betty (Elizabeth Ann Hutchison), his wonderful and beloved wife of 57 years. He was the devoted and proud father of his five children, son Reid and Judy, daughter Diane and Ian Rhind, son John, son Ross, daughter Margo Brunning and ten superb grandchildren: Rose, John, Samantha, Julian, Frank, Christopher, Colin, Hailey, Mitchell and Leah.
A graduate of Trinity College, U of T (Maths' and Physics) and Osgoode Hall, Law. Drew was a lawyer and then appointed to what is now the Superior Court of Justice in May 1976. Upon retirement, he set up a highly respected mediation and arbitration practice and was active until the fall, 2008.
He paddled for Balmy Beach Canoe Club and continued to love paddling and canoe trips. He and two friends organized the Ski Club at Malvern Collegiate Institute in 1942. He later joined Craigleith Ski Club where he had many friends and continued to ski until recently. Drew played tennis at the Granite Club where he also kept fit. He loved spending his summers at his cottage at Pen Lake, Huntsville with his extended family, playing golf, and enjoying all water sports. He became a certified scuba diver in 1966 and had Certificate #12 of the Ontario Underwater Club.
He and Betty delighted in travelling and did so extensively, including skiing in Europe and North America as well as scuba diving in exotic places such as Micronesia, Malaysia, Kenya, the Spice Islands and Australia.
His eternal optimism and joy of life and people will be missed by all. Drew was a special husband, father and grampa whose love of family will be cherished forever.
At his request, cremation has taken place. A service and celebration of Drew's life will be held at All Saints' Anglican Church, Collingwood, on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.
A reception will follow in the Church hall. Instead of flowers, donations to the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital, 459 Hume Street, Collingwood, ON L9Y 1W9, in Drew's memory.
