JOHN KAVANAGH Obituary

Called to the Lord, surrounded by the love of his family on March 22,2026 in Toronto. Born October 4, 1935, John was raised in Ottawa, Ontario. John was the beloved and devoted husband of the late Carole Anne Kavanagh (Clancy), with whom he shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and cherished memories. He was the loving father of Karen (John Stacey) and Stephen (Moira Donnelly), proud and adoring grandfather/Bucky of Holly (Philip Chebaya), Laura (Maire-Philip Poulin), Cayley and Julia, and a treasured great-grandfather to Leo. John's family was the center of his world, and he took immense pride in each of their accomplishments, offering constant encouragement, wisdom, and unwavering love. John was a man of remarkable intellect, integrity, and quiet confidence. He began his studies at St. Patrick's College in Ottawa and continued on to law school, where he was part of the first graduating class at the University of Ottawa. John had a long, distinguished career in law, making his mark as a sole proprietor in Scarborough. As a highly respected lawyer practicing in Toronto, John was known for his sharp mind, thoughtful counsel, and steadfast commitment to fairness and justice. He earned the admiration of colleagues and clients alike through his professionalism, diligence, and solid moral compass. Beyond his professional life, John was a loyal friend, a thoughtful companion, and someone who truly valued connection. He had a gift for conversation-whether it was a spirited discussion about the stock market or memories of life in "small town" Ottawa, John thoroughly enjoyed being in good company, especially over the breakfast or dinner table. John also had a wonderfully playful side. He had a well-known, notorious sweet tooth, never passing up a sugary treat or a glass of chocolate milk, which he enjoyed with delight. He loved a trip to the casino – Vegas and Niagara– where luck always seemed to be on his side-much to the amazement (and occasional disbelief) of those around him. Together with Carole, he built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and enduring friendships-many of which spanned decades. Their life together, especially in the Bridlewood community, was rich with shared experiences and deep bonds. John found his greatest joy in time spent with family-whether at lively Clancy holiday parties, dining with family and friends, sporting events and graduations. His calm presence, story-telling skills, and sharp mind will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and community at Delmanor Prince Edward Retirement Community for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion shown to John. They welcomed him warmly, enriched his days, and gave him the opportunity to form new friendships. Above all, John, a devout Catholic, will be remembered for his deep love of family, his unwavering devotion to his beloved Carole, and the legacy of kindness, strength, and integrity he leaves behind. A visitation will take place from 4:00–7:00 PM on Sunday, March 29th at Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel (1403 Bayview Avenue, Toronto). A funeral service will be held at 9:30 AM on Monday, March 30th at Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (3 Combermere Drive, North York). A reception to follow. The family kindly requests no flowers and in memory of John, donations can made to the Diabetes Canada and/or Scarborough Health Network Foundation (Scarborough General Hospital). Condolences may be sent to www.humphreymiles.com. May he rest in peace … until we meet again.
