JOHN LORN McDOUGALL Obituary

John Lorn McDougall, K.C. (October 19, 1939 – November 28, 2025) John Lorn McDougall, K.C., passed away peacefully, on November 28, 2025, after a short illness. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he was a lifelong skier and fly fisherman and a dedicated weekend farmer, conservationist and dog lover. He was also a distinguished litigator, international arbitrator, and mentor to generations of lawyers. Over a 46-year career with Fraser & Beatty and its successor firms, John Lorn became one of Canada's most respected civil litigators and was regularly ranked among the 10 best advocates in the country. Appointed Queen's Counsel in 1980, he appeared at all levels of court across Canada in a wide range of corporate and commercial disputes, including in several landmark cases before the Supreme Court of Canada. He was admitted to the Bars of Ontario, Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut. He was also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, an honorary overseas member of the Commercial Bar Association of England and Wales, and an honorary Bencher of Middle Temple. For the last 35 years, John Lorn was also a renowned international arbitrator, at different times associated with Arbitration Place in Toronto and 3 Verulam Buildings in London, and serving as chair, party-appointed member, and sole arbitrator in complex, multi-jurisdictional commercial matters around the globe. He served as Chair of the Canadian National Arbitration Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce and as Canada's representative to the ICC Commission on Arbitration in Paris. He was also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the London Court of International Arbitration, the ICDR, the CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution, the American Arbitration Association, ADR Chambers, and the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration. John Lorn is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane (née Rowley); his children, Sarah (David Macdonald) and John (Kerry Croghan), of Toronto, Jenny (Denzil Wadds) of Port Hope, and Eliza (John K. McNulty, Jr.) of Bronxville, NY; and nine grandchildren: Lachlan, Annabelle, Rory, and Georgiana Macdonald; Charlie, Eliza, and Oliver Wadds; and John and Audrey McNulty; his brother, Ian (Mary Futher); and his beloved dogs, Quincy and Monty. He was predeceased by his brother, Tom (Suzanne Panet); his parents, Christina McNaughton and Thomas McDougall; and his grandfather, General Andrew McNaughton, who was a lifelong role model. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Yesterday

I had the privilege of getting to know JL at my salmon fishing camp on the Moisie River and as a member of the Board of the Atlantic Salmon Federation. Our last encounter dates a few year back at the Cold Spring Camp on the Matapedia River. The moments spent with him will never be forgotten.

My condolences to the entire family. JL was a mentor to me in my early years at Fraser & Beatty, and I was privileged to see him in action as the chair of an ICC arbitration panel in a dispute in the U.S. that he involved me on. I was still finding my way as a young lawyer and JL took my questions seriously and helped me to find my path forward within the firm. I will remember him fondly.

JLM, QC (he would scold me for leaving out the "QC"!) was such a special human and role model in my life. Having worked as his assistant and law clerk for more than seven years, I got to know him, as well as his family, very well during that time. I am still heartbroken by the news of his passing-as someone who was larger than life, he was supposed to live until he was 100! He is a legal legend and will be sorely missed by all who had the honour of knowing him. May he rest peacefully and take a break from the steep slopes and deep waters. I will miss you, JL. You were the best boss I ever could have hoped for and it was a privilege to work with you. Thank you for taking a chance on me. Godspeed.

I was a good friend of John Lorne and his brother Tom. We grew up together in Rockcliffe Park. JL attended Osgoode Law School at the same time as I did. We were very active on the ski team together. Gwen and I send sincere condolences to Jane and the family. So long old friend.

JL had a wonderful life. I am happy to have met him at occasional lawyers´ meetings but never at court! My father Seymour A. spoke very fondly of his times with JL's parents, all long ago. My condolences to JL´s family.

We were next door neighbours for many years as kids...as long ago as `49 or `50. Lots of memories floating through my noggin this morning.
