JOHN MCDERMID Obituary

March 17, 1940 - December 6, 2024 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of The Honorable John Horton McDermid, a distinguished former Member of Parliament and respected community leader, on December 6, 2024. Born on March 17, 1940, in Hamilton, Ontario, John dedicated his life to public service and the betterment of his community. John's career in politics began in 1979, when he was elected as the Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament for Brampton-Georgetown. He served with distinction, representing his constituents with unwavering dedication until 1993. During his tenure, John held several key positions while serving in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, including Minister of State for Housing, International Trade, Privatization and Regulatory Affairs, and Finance and Privatization. His contributions to Canadian politics were marked by his commitment to public service and his ability to navigate complex political landscapes with integrity and grace. His professional achievements were complemented by his active involvement in the community, where he was a beloved figure known for his kindness, wisdom, and generosity. John was deeply involved in various community organizations and initiatives in Brampton. He was a dedicated member of the United Church of Canada and actively supported local charities and non-profit organizations. His efforts in promoting community development and supporting local businesses were widely recognized and appreciated. John also played a significant role in advocating for affordable housing and improving public infrastructure in his constituency. Throughout his career, John received numerous awards and honours which included the Queens Diamond and Platinum Jubilee, and most recently, the King Charles Il Medal reflecting his outstanding contributions to public service and the community. He was appointed to the Privy Council in 1988, a testament to his significant role in Canadian politics. Additionally, he was honored with the title of Fellow of the Real Estate Institute for his contributions to the real estate industry. John was dedicated and very involved with Headwaters Healthcare Centre, where he served as Chairman of the Board and then served on the Foundation Board. Golf was John's passion. He, like many of us, was forever looking to lower his handicap, which he consistently tried to do with his regular foursome that he played with at The Devils Pulpit. Never shy to offer advice, "keep your head down, don't sway!" John filled his time after retiring from politics with his custom golf fitting business and at one point served as President of the Club Makers Society! John also served as the Honourary Colonel of the Lorne Scott's Regiment and was proud of his contributions to this long-standing reserve. Thanks to Ancestry, John found a new family, including his birth mother, seven siblings and nieces and nephews, and that has been a real gift. He will be remembered fondly by his family, his many friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. John maintained good humour and resiliency throughout his many health challenges over the last few years and was grateful for the exceptional care that he received over the years. A special thank you to Dr. Alex McCallum, Dr. Jeff McKinnon, his good pal, Christine Eades, and his wonderful PSWs, Wali and Mary, whom he just adored. A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville in John's memory. John's legacy of service, leadership, and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be rooting for the Jays and Leafs from up above! May he rest in peace.

I met John when he became a Resident of CHARTwell Montgomery Village. We became fiends, which was easy to do. He introduced a series of painting, that his Mother had painted. He offered them to some residents, which I was one of the recipients. We felt that we should offer something for the painting and it was suggested to donate to Headwaters Hospital, MRi fund.he was able to collect and donate $3,000 ! Much was donated by John. He was a very kind and generous friend, and he is missed, but will always be remembered. Fran Pendock, a resident and friend.

Johns last year was spent at Orangeville Montgomery Village. I met him for the first time, when he donated beautiful paintings by his mother. I was the recipient of one, and we all donated money in His mother“s name to Headwaters Hospital for a new MRI.
I believe we raised over $3000.00! John became a friend to quite a few of the residents including me. He was so interesting with all his stories of his life. I grew very fond of him as did many. John will be missed by all.

John was instrumental in our adoption process of our son from Hong Kong in 1984. We got to know him and Elaine ; he was always friendly and available . Even though he always knew I was not a conservative, he was willing to offer help.
