John MCKEE Obituary

JOHN ANDREW McKEE Andrew was born on August 13, 1971 and died tragically on March 3, 2022. He was a highly intelligent, kind, sensitive, generous man with a beguiling sense of humour. A wonderful Dad, Brother, Son and Partner. He leaves his beloved daughters, Maggie (18) and Abbey (16); devoted partner, Shelagh Allen; his cherished sister and confidante, Mary McKee; brother-in-law, Chris Pepper; niece and nephew, Sophie and Charlie Pepper; and his heartbroken parents, Susan and Angus.

Andrew loved his daughters beyond anything in the world. He had a special bond with each of them with secret jokes and routines that the three of them treasured. He always made sure to include them in special outings with trips to far-flung reaches of the world like Bali, Austria, travels across Canada, to long drives around the city. The girls and Andrew just recently drove to Washington, D.C. which was a highlight for all of them. He was so very proud of how both Maggie and Abbey have grown into the absolutely amazing young women they've become.

Andrew and his sister Mary shared a special relationship that only few people can share. They always "had each other's backs" no matter what was going on. From day one he was her very proud and protective older brother. Through thick and thin they were a team. She is beyond heartbroken at his loss.

Together Shelagh and Andy built a wonderful life in Toronto, Georgian Bay and around the world. They loved each other deeply.

His parents, Susan and Angus, are devastated at his loss. Susan remembers how he was a sensitive, caring young boy who loved to chat and delve into people's stories. Angus and Andrew shared many adventures together through the years, in life and business.

From an early age, Andrew drew people to him with his generous spirit and engaging personality. He made friends around the room and across the globe. He was an effortless athlete who often surprised opponents with his expertise on the hockey rink, tennis court or golf course.

He was extremely well-read and was highly attuned to the world around him. He graduated from Upper Canada College and received his Executive MBA from the University of Edinburgh, but those were only stepping stones to his bigger life adventures. He certainly didn't like to be rushed and always took his time. Shopping with Andrew could sometimes be an exercise in endurance, but you often came home with something interesting and unexpected.

A loyal friend, Andrew could always be counted on. He stayed close with his many friends from his elementary and high school days. Known as Geeze by his high school buddies, he was an old soul in khakis and a blue blazer from an early age. Andrew loved laughing and great conversation. A quick wit with a highly tuned sense of sarcasm, Andrew wasn't shy of pointing out your foibles. But as much as he gave, he could always take the jokes thrown at him. Andrew loved a black tie dinner or an expensive meal with copious amounts of champagne as much as he loved a drive-through meal and a bottle of Coke. Followed by a cigarette.

He was highly successful in his many business ventures and served as a senior officer and director of several public, private and not-for-profit corporations - including as the Past President and CEO at Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Over the past number of years he built a highly successful children's gear distribution business, 5514Km Corporation. He zigged while others zagged - he thought differently and deeply about how to navigate the business world and was rewarded for his unique perspectives and insights. He was often called upon to provide advice and guidance to colleagues and competitors and his advice and counsel will be sorely missed by many.

Beyond the business world, he believed in helping out causes dear to his heart. His community involvement includes serving as the Chairman and a Director of the Stem Cell Network, and as the former Chairman, Past President and Director of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. He was recently appointed to Ryerson University's Board of Governors as a Lieutenant Governor-in-Council appointee.

Please remember Andrew for the amazing father, brother, son, partner and friend that he was.

He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and colleagues around the world.

Above all, Andrew treasured and adored his two amazing daughters, Maggie and Abbey. They have inherited his brilliance and they will continue to shine in his absence.

Details on Andrew's funeral will be forthcoming. Please see the Humphrey website, www.humphreymiles.com for confirmation of the details when available and to leave condolences. In remembrance of Andrew's life, the family asks that those who wish to express sympathy to please consider donating to charities that were important to Andrew. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.ca), The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (email: [email protected]) or Georgian Bay Forever (georgianbayforever.org).

Our heartfelt condolences to Shelagh and the girls. We are neighbours with Andrew and Shelagh at Oak Bay. We will miss sitting on our front porch across from Andrew and Shelagh enjoying our morning coffees and chats with them, and of course Andrew enjoying his cigarette. We will miss him dearly.

I first met Andrew when he was a bright, towheaded boy with missing front teeth. He was perched on top of the refrigerator watching Sue prepare dinner and chatting away about friends and school. My daughter Jessica, only three years old and a Montessori School friend of Mary's, was fascinated. I was, too. Andrew was loved beyond words. I grieve for his family at this terrible time and hold them in my heart.

We feel very fortunate that Andrew was a part of our life and feel blessed for all the times we spent together.
Known affectionately by our family as John, we have lost someone who felt so much more than an uncle and a brother-in-law. Time and again, we saw his enormous love for Maggie and Abbey and his pride in the wonderful young women they have become. He was an amazing big brother to Mary and loving partner to Shelagh, looking out for them with such devotion. Over the years, we gathered in so many different places - to visit somewhere new or simply to enjoy being together again. Every time, he brought his wit, charm and generosity. John had a big heart and we will miss him dearly.

John, your smile and spirit will be remembered for a very long time, with all our love.

With such shock and sadness for the whole family, I write this note of condolence for Andy's passing. What a great man! In my business dealings with Andy, few as they were, his immensity as a genuine sincere human being will never cease in my thoughts and memories. Andy had a special knack of making one feel present and worth the time of interaction. His magnetic personality just lit up a room and made everyone he spoke to feel like they were the only one he was speaking to at the time. NO wonder he such a vibrant successful individual and he will be missed.
My condolences to the whole family especially his daughters and then of course, Shelagh, who especially is my thoughts of sadness; for theirs was an amazing whirlwind, loving relationship that is rare to find.
My prayers of peace to all!

I will miss you Andrew, your wit and wisdom. I will remember you with respect and admiration.
We began as colleagues in the health sector, when Andrew was the CEO at JDRF, and became friends as directors on the board of the Stem Cell Network. We often chatted about our kids and Andrew so loved his girls, once chuckling about his father-daughter dance during Covid. Andrew was a builder. He built organizations, communities and relationships, and he will be so missed. He was a fine man. With deep sorrow and condolences to his family. Sharon

We are so so sorry for your loss Shelagh, Maggie, Abbey and Andrew´s family. Andrew was a brilliant, fun loving guy, cut down in his prime.
We heard much about Andy before we ever met him. We joked that he was Shelagh´s imaginary boyfriend! We´ll
always remember Andy for his signature coke, cigarette and fireman T shirts, his dry wit, super smarts and his generosity. It was so evident that he adored his beautiful girls Maggie and Abbey. Fond memories of the six bottles of bubbles we all went through just before New Year´s Eve one time at the cottage, fun times on Bumpy Ride. You made the cottage so much fun.
Our family is so sad and we are thinking of you all. We are always here for you. All our love xxx

On our ski trips, Andy was the undisputed leader of the B-team. The A-team skied relentlessly all day, whilst the B-team took the time to stop for a nice lunch, and got to the bar first.
Farewell Andy. The B-team will miss you.

Our family is shocked and saddened and we extend our deepest sympathy to Susan and Angus and to his adored and adoring wife Shelagh and daughters Maggie and Abbey. I know Mary and her family were very close to him and will miss him very much. Ian said he had a great talk with him at the recent UCC Reunion and enjoyed hearing about what he was doing, very humble as always. I remember a carefree happy boy,who had a quirky sense of fun, a pleasant manner, great grin and even then knew what really matters in life. His business career and community service were truly outstanding. He became a person who made every day count, and he will be greatly missed. Fondly, Janet

Only 126 degrees on the tarmac in Hermosillo, Mexico could cause the blue blazer to come off. I´ll forever remember the beet red face, blazer over one arm, and Andy playfully swearing at me for bringing him to hell. Andy was the smartest person I know...period. He knew a lot about everything and had a well conceived opinion on all subject matter. And, not many opinions meant more. Liz and I regret not forcing him and Shelagh down to Cody and going to the Stampede Rodeo and hiking the Big Horns together as was the plan. Andy, you are missed.

A large glass of red, a cigarette and a razor wit. Dinner at the Balmoral for his 30th, tea in the garden at home, and the lunch at Casa Monolo we were yet to have.
