John MCKENNA Obituary

JOHN HUGH McKENNA John Hugh McKenna lived his 84 years to the fullest. He was a dentist, a sportsman, a reader who loved history and poetry. He was born in Ireland, but equally considered himself a son of Canada, and he loved them both. Laughter and love nourished him; he needed no invitation to debate politics, curse golf, and quote Yeats. He loved his patients and his friends. Most of all, he loved his wife of 53 years, Patricia; his four children, Catherine, Sean (Katie MacGuire), Maureen (Lee Greenberg) and David; and his 11 grandchildren, Matt, Isabelle, Cormac, Hugh, Stuart, Kathleen, Eleanor, Maude, Nicola, Luke and Nori. John (and his twin, Tom) were born in Dublin on August 28, 1938. They were the youngest of six McKenna boys including Father Dermot SJ, Kieran, Gearóid (all predeceased) and Padraic. His father, Patrick McKenna, an accountant, and his mother, Mary, a teacher, established McKenna's pub in Dublin after Patrick retired from the Irish army. John and his brothers spent many hours of their youth bottling Guinness in the basement. John graduated from dentistry at University College Dublin in 1961. He then worked as a dentist in London, England, and in 1966, he made one of life's big decisions: he chose to leave Ireland and come to Canada where he pursued post-graduate studies in dentistry at the University of Toronto. He met Patricia (née Hopper) who was studying nursing at UofT. He was smitten and she was charmed. They were married in 1969. He always said that he was the luckiest man in the world to have found her. John and Pat moved to Hamilton, where he practiced dentistry for over 50 years and where they started a family. It was home for the rest of his life. John loved sports. He played both waterpolo and rugby at University College Dublin. He went on to captain the London Irish RFC. He earned a fearsome reputation with the Toronto Irish Rugby Club and the Hamilton Hornets, and represented Canada in an international match against England in 1967 for which he earned a cap. John was a long-time squash player at the Hamilton Thistle Club and could often be found on the course of the Hamilton Golf and Country Club - where he had been President and Captain - cursing his golf or that of his friends. Always, he was a tireless champion of Hamilton. Over the years he was on the boards of The Good Shepherd, Theatre Aquarius, and the Hamilton Philharmonic. He also worked to advance peace and reconciliation in Ireland as a board member of the Ireland Fund of Canada. His children and family were the centre of his life. He loved going on family holidays especially to Ireland and during the summer could always be found in the family swimming pool throwing his grandchildren in the air. And while he loved them all equally, if any grandchild was sad, he would whisper to them that they were his favourite. While his passing leaves a huge loss, he will be forever remembered for his good humour, generous spirit, sharp wit and charm. Special thanks to Dr. Irwin Walker and the Hematology Team at the Juravinski Hospital for the care they provided. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 260 Herkimer St., Hamilton on Thursday, April 20 at 11 a.m. Following the Mass there will be a reception. A live-stream of the Mass may be found at: https://fweb.tv/99942. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Good Shepherd or the Juravinski Hospital. John would love most that you share a memory and a laugh with family and friends. Online condolences can be left at www.dermodys.com.

Just got the news that my old but most eloquent buddy and colleague from the venerable Man of Arran has passed.
What a delightful character and a great mentor for me in my early days in Canada.
Great fellow rugby man at Lansdowne in Dublin as well.
Not to mention the Hospitals Rugby Cup where we all found our special place.
Boy did he know how to put you in your place, but we loved him even more for it.

Ni fheicimid a leitheid arais agus aris.
Go neiri an spiorad naomh leis agus e ar neamh anois.
Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

My most sincere condolences to you Pat and all your family. Working in a dental office was my first work employment after high school, with John (and "Gerry") I was chairside assistant to both of them for 13 years and when John assumed Dr. Gerry McKenna's practice as his brother returned to Dublin to open a new practice back home.
John had a wonderful sense of humour and I enjoyed working with him every day. His pet name for me was
"useless" which was not negative as I fully understood his meaning by using it. We would laugh over it.
When someone you love dies you never quite get over it. You just slowly learn how to go on without them by always keeping them tucked safely in your heart.
With utmost sincerity, Karen Jackson Dandie (Calgary)

My deep and heartfelt condolences to Pat and family.
May time bring peace, grace bring healing and love bring comfort.

Dr McKenna was my family´s dentist during my childhood in Hamilton. What serendipity to stumble upon this sad news. He was truly a decent fellow and a skilled and caring dentist. I have warm memories of babysitting his kids, and of Dr McKenna crashing the end of my wedding at the HGCC many years ago, as he finished a golf game. I will always remember him approaching, offering heartfelt best wishes with his warm smile and twinkle in his eye!

So sorry for your loss,

Our sincere condolences to Pat and family. When I came to Hamilton in 1969, John was one of a small group of downtown dentists that met for lunch once or twice a week at local delis. There were always interesting discussions of dentistry and life and John never disappointed with a joke and his wonderful sense of humor.
Pat was a classmate of my wife Jacki at U of T Nursing, and we all shared a common bond of love of family and profession.
Jacki and I send our love to you Pat and your wonderful family.
We will hold John in our hearts.
May his memory be a blessing.

I knew Dr. McKenna as a most engaging person. He had a strong passion for everything Irish, and once he knew we shared the same background he always gave me his thoughts on anything and everything, when we chanced to bump into each other. I met him as a golfer at HGCC where we were both members at that time. I recall he never made a bad shot, however, his clubs betray him often enough. A fond memory is John telling a young backshop teenager working that day in club storage to leave the headcovers off his clubs overnight, because they had been terrible on that day, and he was mad at them. My condolences to the McKenna family , especially his dear wife, Pat. Tim Maloney

Like John, I have thought of your family many times over the years. Our transition to Hamilton was made so much easier by being embraced by the McKenna family. Pat, you and John were so welcoming. And there was always laughter whenever John was `holding court´. Pat, my thoughts and sympathies are with you and all your family.

We have such hilarious childhood memories from time spent with Dr. McKenna! You'd think our mother would have a hard time dragging six kids to the dentist every six months. Not so! We had such fun there with him! He'd let us run from room to room watching each other have our teeth cleaned, and he'd tease us endlessly about our Nana (Clara O'Neal) whom he adored!

As the years passed, and we went from little bits terrorizing the office, into adults going through university, getting married and having children ourselves, the conversations in his chair changed. In these cherished moments we discovered the many layers and depth of this incredible man. He shared with us his tremendous values, and his belief in the importance of life. He always communicated in so many ways, his pride and fierce love for his children. Catherine, Sean, Maureen and David. How fortunate you all are to have had such an inspiring father!

As with all the greats... you always wish you'd spent more time... Perhaps that is the lesson...

Carry on to the Father now... as we all breathe a deep sigh...

But alas... solace... as we see and hear the gates gently creaking open on that soft, fluffy cloud... with the Father standing there in all His Glory before you, saying, "Come in... John, for certainly, with you, son, I am well pleased."

Dr. McKenna (to us kids) would often offer to drive us to school in his pale yellow 1970(?) Oldsmobile Cutlass. In his clipped Irish accent he would command us into the car and offer bits of wisdom as we went. We were aware of his fierce and definite (and kind!) nature. He didn't mince words and was unlike other adults in the hood. Later in life I found him engaging and curious and was quick with a quip or opinion. I never saw him down - always a great energy about this man. All the best to you, John!

As neighbours on Chedoke Ave, John Mckenna was famous in our house, and famous in our minds. He humoured all of us. He took the sting out of a sideways comment and forever found the humour in life. Seeing his photo here brings a smile to my face. Brings me right back to the backyard on Chedoke, where he hit golf balls off the back deck into the forest. When I was 7 or 8 I decided to change my name to Joanna, he was the only person ever to call me by that name. He made people feel important. Dear Pat, you both make marriage look cool. Thinking of you all so much. Lots of love.

Although it wasn't till our retirement years in Florida that we met and became friends, Bob and I always looked forward to our gatherings over the winter. We especially remember the good times spent celebrating St. Paddy's Day. There was never a lack of conversation, laughter, or friendly argument. John's clever wit continually kept us 'on our toes' and we remember well his banter with the servers when out for supper. His love of family and pride in their accomplishments were continually evident.
We will miss you John and will surely raise a glass to your memory on March 17th.

So sorry to read of Dr. John's death..my family & I were long time patients. I was a patient of brother Dr. MIchael & 1961 I was involved in head-on with drunk driver/no seat belts & my mouth was mangled. On an emerg Saturday morn, Dr. said my brother is student of UofT & has learned this new procedure "crowns", so he was called on site & after much restorative work, made crowns which lasted till 2000 when he replaced. He loved to show photos of procedure! I am so lucky to have known him, with every smile & meal I eat. Long live Ireland!

John was my dentist for 50 years and helped me keep all my teeth, so I can attest that he was very good.
I played rugby with him and was glad not to be playing against him; again I say, I still have all my teeth. He was a good golfer too, he told me so a few times at the Irish Club after buying me a pint of Guinness! He was always great company, loved life, loved most things with a passion, his work, his sports, his wife and family, his city, his Irish heritage and culture. Nothing was done half-heartedly. Farewell dear friend, I shall miss our talks about rugby, Dublin, life and death. You had a good round. My deepest sympathies to Pat and the family.
