John MCLEOD Obituary

John Tennyson (Jack) McLeod
(Professor Emeritus,
University of Toronto)

On Thursday, September 22,
2016, peacefully, with his family
present, Jack McLeod died of
cholangiocarcinoma, in the 84th
year of a full and well-lived life
He earned a B.A. and M.A. in
economics at the University of
Saskatchewan before taking a
Ph.D. in political science at the
University of Toronto, including
a year's fellowship at the London
School of Economics. He taught
at the University of Toronto from
1959-1996 and, after retirement,
a course on the Politics and
Media for senior students. An
experience in Budapest during
the Hungarian Revolution in
1956 began his career in political
journalism. Articles appeared in
The Globe and Mail, The Toronto
Star, Saturday Night, Maclean's,
Canadian Forum, Books in
Canada and the Journal of
Canadian Studies.
   He was often a political
commentator on CBC television
and on radio. McLeod published
academic works with the
University of Toronto Press,
Oxford University Press and
McLelland and Stewart as well as
two political science textbooks
He co-edited, with his wife, two
books of political anecdotes for
Oxford University Press.
He served on the board of the
Toronto General Hospital from
1971-1978.
   Writing fiction under the
pseudonym of Jack MacLeod, he
published three comic novels,
two of which were best sellers
and two were shortlisted for the
Stephen Leacock Prize: Zinger
and Me, Going Grand and
Uproar. His commonplace book
Reflections in My Wintertime was
published (2015) by David Mason
Books. A fourth novel, To Build a
Better World will be released
posthumously by TOH Press in
autumn 2016.
He had a marvelous sense of
humour, a lively personality, was
practical and calm and above
all, possessed a generous spirit
of friendship. He is sadly
mourned by his wife of thirty
years, Cynthia Smith (nee
Thomas), daughters Heather
McLeod Bennett (Kelly) of
Fairfax, CA and Adrienne Smith
Kirby (Kevin) of Toronto; son,
Andrew Price-Smith (Janell) of
Colorado Springs, CO; and six
grandchildren. Cremation has
occurred. At his wish, there will
be no funeral. A wake for friends
and colleagues will be held in
later October.
   The family is grateful to
Drs. Barbara Vari and Dale
Dotten of St. Michael's Hospital;
Dr. M.N. Margulies, Drs. A Al-
Awamer and John Kim of the
Princess Margaret Hospital; the
outstanding medical team of the
Temmy Latner Centre for
Palliative Care (Drs. Branigan,

nurses Michelle and Nigel; PSW

McPhail.
