John MCSHERRY Obituary
MCSHERRY, John R.
Passed away peacefully in Toronto on June 27, 2012, in his 92nd year, after suffering a severe stroke. John was born in Winnipeg on November 28, 1920 and moved to Toronto as a teenager. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Dorothy, who was always his best friend and, in his later years, devoted caregiver. Father to two children Patricia and James (Gloria) and grandfather to their children Sarah and John. He is survived by brother Bernard of Guelph and predeceased by sister Norah. John began his banking career with the Bank of Commerce prior to WW II where he served as a navigator in the RCAF Ferry Command. He returned to the Bank after the war working in Toronto, New York and Montreal before retiring as a senior officer of CIBC in 1981. In retirement, John was proud to serve as the first Executive Director of The Toronto Community Foundation. He enjoyed a long and remarkably healthy retirement until the onset and progression of Alzheimer's over the past five years. John had time to continue to pursue his passion for golf, curling, travel and all things related to the farm in Loree. The farm was a refuge in his working days and an outlet for his boundless energy in retirement. Later in life, John liked nothing more than a long walk on a beautiful day. His enjoyment of this pastime never diminished even as common sights and sounds became less familiar. The family will receive friends at the TURNER PORTER YORKE CHAPEL , 2357 Bloor Street W., Toronto (at Windermere, east of Jane subway) (416-767-3153) for a visitation on Wednesday July 4, 2012 at 2 pm, followed by a Service of Remembrance in the Chapel at 3pm. If desired, a memorial donation to the Alzheimer Society of Ontario would be appreciated.
