John MORDEN Obituary

The family is saddened to announce the passing of John Reid Morden on May 7, 2024, in Toronto. Reid was born to Isabelle (Reid) and Warren Morden on June 17, 1941, in Hamilton. He grew up in Montreal before the family moved to Halifax, where Reid graduated from Dalhousie University. While at Dal, Reid met the love of his life, Margaret (Keens), and they married in 1964. In 1963, Reid joined the Department of External Affairs and represented Canada in Karachi, Geneva, New York and Tokyo. Once their wanderlust was satiated, Margaret and Reid stayed in Ottawa, with Reid ultimately becoming the Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of Atomic Energy of Canada. In recognition of his distinguished public service career, Reid was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada and Dalhousie awarded him a Doctor of Laws. His public service career also resulted in being selected as the Executive Director of the Independent Inquiry Committee into the UN's Iraq Oil-for-Food program. After retirement, Reid served on several Boards, including Trent University and the Royal Canadian Military Institute. One constant in Reid's life was spending time relaxing at Cache Lake in Algonquin Park. In his spare time, Reid enjoyed golf, classical music, reading thrillers, biographies and books on military history. Reid leaves his wife of almost 60 years, Margaret; his two sons, Michael (Angela) and Geoffrey (Lisa); and five grandchildren, Stephanie (Adam), Vanessa, James, Matthew and Isabelle. The family would like to thank the staff in the Toronto General ICU and 6B for their care. A memorial service will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Friends of Algonquin Park or a Charity of Your Choice would be appreciated.

I am deeply saddened at Reid's passing. Our deepest condolences. I have had the privilege to getvto know him over the past decade or so both as a Saturday morning coffee companion but the opportunity to walk back up Yonge st as we talked through global challenges of the day. Hus sage voice, advise and even admonitions I will cherish for a long time.

Dear Margaret and family
I was saddened to learn of Reid´s passing.our professional lives were bound in so many ways over the years from sharing the same desk literally at the beginning of our careers to being compatriot Deputy Ministers in Fort Pearson. Reid was a man of unwavering principle, of conscientious duty, of humility and a model for all of us. He and I shared so many thoughts on the issues of the day and his advice was always treasured.
Our paths have crossed less frequently in the last couple of years but our friendship was firm.
My sincere condolences to all of you

Dear Margaret, Michael, Geoffrey and family members. I want to express my most sincere sympathies and condolences on the death of your beloved husband, father and grandfather. We first met in Tokyo in 1977 and struck up a friendship that continued since then. He was everything mentioned in the obituaries and more. A devoted public servant who rendered great service to Canada at home and abroad. He was one of the last Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs to have actually served abroad and it showed. We worked closely on several sensitive files while he was DM, including a successful defence of a $100 million law suit against Foreign Affairs in the choice of the then new heaquarters for the International Civil Aviation Organization in Montreal. He came to Athens representing the Minister at a NATO Ministerial Meeting and we skipped a formal lunch to introduce him to some real Greek food. But he did attend a reception for Ministers where I was able to introduce him to half the Greek Cabinet. I didn't know about his teaching at Laurier. But his lectures would have been masterful. My thoughts and pr9oayers are with you at this difficult time.

I had the pleasure of working in the Director's Secretariat during the early days of CSIS when Reid Mordon was the Director. I admired his intelligence and his savy when it came to security intelligence work. One of the best directors the service has had. He will be truly missed.
