To John's family--He was my best friend growing up.
Not subscribing to the Globe and Mail--I have just
come across the sad news--feeling particularly sad
in not being at the funeral to pay my respects
He was such a good friend--Tom Ryder

I met your father through Peter Gordon (my godfather) and uncle. I am an environmental lawyer with a philosophy background. Your dad kindly invited me to multiple lunches over many years at the University Club. Initially, we had several discussions on law and religion involving a paper your father wrote, then we moved into law. Sadly, I only saw your father once since I changed law firms in 2013 and must have been some time later as his memory had diminished and he did not recall me. However, the memory I wish to share was one of these lunches in the early 2000s where we had a very involved discussion about a 1981 case that your father decided at the Court of Appeal on an environmental matter. The discussion was so memorable to me because it is one of my favourite cases for providing the history of Ontario air pollution law, and because your father not only recalled and discussed the case, but also recalled and explained to me a rival case involving Judge Reid at the time (Divisional Court) that went to the Supreme Court of Canada and set out a new legal test that replaced your father's test from his case. As always, your father was so humble and impartial about what he contributed to this case while also demonstrating his remarkable memory and analysis some 25 years after the event. I am honoured to have had many lively times with him. I carry with me very much today his exemplary example of humility.

Although John and I were both in the law trade, with my late wife Patsy we visited for chatty visits at Joyce´s cottage in Pointe au Baril several times and became damn good friends. I hold John close to my heart.

A fine man ... an excellent lawyer ... a great judge ... an exemplary figure for all who were fortunate enough to be a part of his life, personally or professionally ...as a judge, a standard to be met by the rest of the judges on any court .... inspirational for all who paused and took notice of the greatness in their midst ... as retired judge of the SCJ, I am grateful for his presence around Osgoode Hall , and advice, over the years ...

John was a friend from my earliest days in practice. At one point I nearly became a colleague. I appeared before him both when he was a trial judge and when he was on the Court of Appeal. On each occasion I came away knowing that I had connected and that my submissions were completely understood, albeit not always with success. Following his retirement we would meet for lunch at Osgoode occasionally, particularly when we were both authoring books on civil appeals. He was all that is set out in his obituary and it it with regret that I will be unable to attend the service on the 4th.

...and then there were those regular casual Saturday luncheons near Granite Place --- John, Horace Krever, Bob Montgomery and Ed Saunders. A remarkable gathering. What memories.

I knew John, seemingly forever, in business and at The YORK Club.
He was a great guy and a true gentleman, a rarity these days.

I had the pleasure of knowing John in his later years at the Granite Place condominium. I would often see him in the condo gym keeping himself fit. As a retired lawyer I enjoyed hearing John's stories about his days on the bench. He represented everything fine in our profession. What a gentleman he was. I also envied John's wonderful hair!
