John MURRAY Obituary

MURRAY, Dr John McGuire
BA, D.D.S., MSc.

Peacefully at his residence on
Thursday, January 15, 2015, of
London in his 73rd year
Lovingly remembered by his
wife and best friend of 48 years
Nancy (Alexander), children
Brooke (Jeff Charon) and John-
David (Kleo Landucci) (who both
suffered through headgear and
retainers), an especially proud
Poppi to his grandchildren
Beatrix and George Murray. We
send our love to his sister Jane
Murray (Sandi Sabloff), nephew
Mike Tissenbaum (Pearl Chen),
who also begrudgingly wore a
retainer, his aunt Nora Selkirk
(McGuire), cousins Bob, Ken and
John and all the Selkirk family
Born in Calgary, raised in
Toronto and Montreal, John
received his BA from Western,
his DDS from McGill and his MSc
from the University of Manitoba
with a specialty in orthodontics
After settling in London, John
enjoyed many years in private
practice and began a 40 year
teaching career at the Graduate
Orthodontics Clinic at the
Schulich School of Medicine &
Dentistry. Upon his retirement, a
bursary, the 'John & Nancy
Murray Scholarship Prize,' was
established to be awarded to a
second year ortho student. We
are all very proud to keep his
name involved with the school
For many years John was an
avid tennis player, and was
known to venture south of the
border with a gang, due to
inclement weather. He was a
regular face around the courts of
the London Hunt & Country Club
and annually supported their
Thanksgiving Fox Hunt. A
natural teacher, great friend and
lover of food, wine, art and
theatre, no one was happier in
the company of others - having a
good laugh, throwing a party, or
talking as loudly as needed to be
heard (McGuire). When asked
once, he said that he chose
orthodontics because he could
see the change in his patients
self-esteem and self-confidence
when the treatment was finished
- that made all the difference in
the world for him. A private
gathering will held at a later
date.
