John Layton Murray 1928 - 2003
John Layton Murray 1928 - 2003 John Murray travelled on his final journey July 11, surrounded by loved ones. John lived a creative, adventurous and gracious life. Born in Saint John, he grew up in Waterloo, with parents JJ, Jessie and big brother Lew. He studied at Ridley and Waterloo College, graduating with the famous class of 51. John excelled in Art and Design and began his career as a furniture designer, with advanced studies at MIT.
John met dancer Joan McCallum and learned to ski to accompany her to Mont Tremblant with the Chicopee Ski Club. They fell in love in the Quebec landscape. Children Cameron, Douglas and Malcolm were born in Kitchener and the family moved to Galt when John taught furniture design at Ryerson. In 1965 the Murrays journeyed to Sainte Adele, Quebec, when John began a new Design practice and Joan taught skiing. Joan passed away in 1988 and John returned to Mont Tremblant to begin painting in watercolours. His paintings were well received at exhibitions in Waterloo, Charlottetown and Mont Tremblant.
John Murray passed away peacefully holding the hands of his granddaughters Emma and Jessie. John touched many hearts through his Art and peaceful presence. John is missed by his family: Lorraine, Doug, Douglas, Jessie Murray; Jessica Carter; Michelle, Charles, Tristan Lauzon; Eilish, Mike Floyd all of Mont Tremblant; Pat, Malcolm, Emma Murray of Charlottetown; Laura-Jean Kelly, Cameron Murray of Vancouver; Elaine, Jeff Murray of Waterloo; Catherine Murray, Larry, and Lawrence Buchan of Port Moody. A Tribute will be held on Thursday, July 17 at 4 pm, at 197 Cote Commandant, Mont Tremblant, Quebec. Contributions may be made to Cancer research.
