Despite his wonderful contribution to the saving of the Heart of Savary, my prime memory of John Nichol will always be of the time my Savary neighbour, Arnie, planted a cedar hedge along the property line. Arnie worked hard, hauling in soil and horse manure, and the hedge certainly was initially attractive. Except by spring, the salt air had killed each and every one of the little cedars.
Newly arrived the next summer,I was sympathizing with Arnie over the loss of his hedge when John came along. John said nothing, went over to a little cedar, rubbed the brittle needles between his thumb and finger, and respectfully said," I've got to hand it to you, Arnie. A lot of people can grow the green cedars, but these golden ones take a very special talent".
He will certainly be missed.

A king of a man, a man of great kindness. I shall remember his broad smile, and keen wit. I cherish the image of John walking his beloved dachshund, Shorty, on the front beach in mid-summer.

Quietly among my earliest heroes, rest in peace Senator.

I hear Uncle John's voice as we strolled by the deck at Savary - "come on up for a drink" and up we'd go to share stories and hear about politics, the arbutus tree, his latest fishing stories, the birds they had seen and more with he and Roseann. Of course my earliest memories are more of a feeling - being welcomed and engaged even as a child by Uncle Pickle Nichol and Auntie Lizzie. Fred and I wish all the family well at this sad time.
