John NICHOLLS Obituary

JOHN F. NICHOLLSMay 8, 1940 - September 6, 2022John Nicholls, age 82, of Toronto passed away peacefully September 6th, at home after a short illness with family by his side. John was the son of the late Dr. John V.V. and Adeline Nicholls, was born on May 8, 1940 in Montreal, Quebec and came to Toronto to attend the University of Toronto. He was a longtime civil servant at the Department of Canadian Heritage and enjoyed being involved in politics at all levels, and was most proud of his time serving under Premier Bill Davis. John was an excellent role model for many during his many years of service. John was exemplary in his professionalism, integrity, modesty, and his dedication to his work. His passion for politics took him through several election campaigns. He was devoted to his community and in 2012 was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by the office of the Governor General of Canada in recognition of his significant contribution of community work and volunteerism. John was very knowledgeable and had a love for history and politics. John was a passionate storyteller who loved telling stories to anyone who would listen. He was known for his good sense of humor and his hearty laugh. John was a dedicated family man who was deeply principled and always sought to instill good values into his two sons. During their childhood he was always supportive and involved in their sporting events. He was a very adored grandfather (Grump Grump) and he cherished the time he got to spend with his beautiful granddaughters. He is survived by his loving spouse of 49 years Alice (née Manel), his children Jonathan (Rachel) of Toronto, Christopher (Lori) of Fredericton NB; and his adoring and cherished granddaughters Neve, Halle, Maddy and Amelia. He will be remembered lovingly by his sister Libby Toop (Ron) and his sister-in-law Hanneke Janssen (late Peter). A determined and caring leader, John will be missed by his family, neighbors and friends. Much-loved by all and gone too soon. Donations may be made in his memory to the Sunnybrook NICU or to a Charity of Your Choice. John will be cremated and a private family gathering will take place.
