JOHN PATTISON Obituary
John Charles Pattison died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, September 29, 2025, at Sunnybrook Hospital after a year with pancreatic cancer, which he described as a bummer. John was born in Ottawa on October 25, 1945. He grew up in Sarnia, Ontario. John received a B.A. from Huron University (gold medallist), an M.A. from the University of Western Ontario, and a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics. He was later a professor of Economics at the University of Western Ontario and subsequently a professor of Finance at the Ivey business school. John also worked at the O.E.C.D. in Paris, France. Later, at CIBC, John worked in roles, including in London, England, as an investment banker, and as a director of subsidiaries in London, Paris, and Sydney, Australia. John worked in many roles with CIBC in Toronto and Barbados, and after retirement taught specialized courses in Italy, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Zambia. He has published dozens of books and articles on finance and regulation. John was a member of the French Chamber of Commerce in Canada for many years, and in 1998 the French Government conveyed the honour of Chevalier de l'Ordre national de la Legion d'honneur upon him. John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Gwen (Griffith); and their children, Jennifer Bartholomew (Stephen) and Derek (Erin James). He was a proud grandfather to Arthur and Lila Bartholomew and Eileigh and Brynn Pattison. He was predeceased by his sister, Valerie Stapleton (Jim). He will be remembered by Valerie and Jim's five sons and their families. Visitation will be from 5–7 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mt. Pleasant Road, Toronto M4T 2V8. Funeral with reception to follow on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., also at the Mt. Pleasant Funeral Centre. If desired, donations may be made to the Sunnybrook Foundation in John's memory.
