JOHN POSTLE Obituary

1941- 2025 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John T. Postle, in his 84th year, in Georgetown, Ontario. John was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, to Lawrence Postle and Alma Rannebarger. He spent some of his youth in Val D'Or, Québec, but mostly grew up in Copper Mountain, BC. He graduated with a degree in Mining Engineering from UBC (1965) and completed an MSc. in Mineral Economics at Stanford University (1968). He met his future business partner, Bill Roscoe, while they worked together at Cominco's Wedge Mine in New Brunswick in 1967. In 1985, John and Bill founded Roscoe Postle Associates (RPA), which over time became an internationally recognized geological and mining consulting firm, with offices in Toronto, Vancouver, Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec City, Denver (Colorado, USA) and London (U.K.) According to the Northern Miner, RPA set 'the gold standard in geological and mining engineering consulting, mineral valuations, and resource/reserve work.' John was known for his professional and ethical standards. He played a major role in developing principles for mineral reserve and resource disclosure, first within the Canadian mining industry, then into Canadian law (National Instrument 43-101), and ultimately into international law. In 2012, John was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service to the mining industry. John and Bill jointly received a Prospector's and Developer's Association of Canada Special Achievement award in 2004, and in 2024 they became members of the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. John was a supporter of the arts and served on the Board of Directors of the Oakville Symphony. From 2008 until her death in May 2023, John was often seen at music and theatre events with his friend, Patricia. His final two years involved medical challenges which he faced with courage and humour, before his peaceful death on February 28th. John was predeceased by his sister, JoAnne. He is survived by his loving daughters, Tricia (Alex) and Kristen (Steve); by his former spouse, Carol; by neices and nephews, Geoff (Brenda), Cathy, and Laurie (Chuck); and by many friends and colleagues. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date, to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Oakville Symphony are gratefully appreciated.

I am so very sorry to belatedly hear of John's death from CIM. I first met John in 1974 when working as a young engineer at Strathcona Mine of Falconbridge when he would come to chat with Les Dunks, my boss. Subsequently, John and I both worked for Harrison Bradford in St. Catharines on the Strait of Belle Isle Tunnel Crossing project. While there, I helped him build a backyard patio. When that work ended, John joined David S. Robertson and Associates where he did the financial assessment for nationalization of Saskatchewan potash industry and was engaged on the expansion of Denison Mines in Elliot Lake, where I worked after Harrison Bradford. When John began his mineral resources/reserves work for CIM, he did me the honor of asking for my comments and later when I wrote Technical Reports for Western Potash he again honored me by telling the company President that he could depend on my work -- high praise from THE expert. We stayed in contact almost to the end. My sincerest condolences to Trish and Kristen and their families. John, you will be greatly missed. RIP

Rest easy John. Know that every day I do my best to apply what you taught me. Your experience and kindness helped a young engineer's confidence and for that I will be forever grateful.

Very sad news indeed. Will be well remembered. Always cheerful and welcoming to me, quick with a joke and a good laugh. In all the years I knew and worked with him, I never heard him utter an angry word.

Deepest sympathies to John´s family and friends.

John was a life-long friend of my father, George, collaborating at work and play, likely getting up to no good! They expanded their net to loop in my husband, Marc, with various fishing trips and fun times. They certainly fished together, mined together, shared stories together, and enjoyed some whiskey together. I think my dad and John are now reunited and will not waste any time picking up where they left off.

John will be dearly missed. May memories of his humour and wit bring a fond smile.

Our condolences,
Samantha Espley and Marc Boudreau
